Chapter-17

 Caroline gasps at him and without wasting any more time in asking questions, she throws open her door and rushes out. As if on cue, Klaus sprints towards his car, Caroline hot on his trail. He pushes open the door to passenger seat. Caroline swears, at the sight of usually smiling and warm face of Danny turned to pale and cold. His eyes closed and his hand clenched on his chest.

“Let’s carry him to my car.” She says quickly, aware of how messed up the current situation is. They carry him to the back seat of her car and Caroline hands over her keys to Klaus. “You drive, I’ll sit with him in the back seat.”

Klaus barely nods and rushes to the driver’s side and swiftly shuts the door. He then twists the keys and drives as fast as he can. They reach hospital and three nurses are already waiting for them at the entry of the hospital premises with a stretcher. He pulls over the car and shouts, “In the back seat”. The nurses rush towards the rear door and open it and carefully get Danny out and lay him on the stretcher and run inside the premises. Klaus turns to run along with them, then quickly glances in Caroline’s way and she nods swiftly. As if on cue, he rushes behind the nurses and his father on the stretcher.

Caroline gets in her car to leave for airport, she glances at time on her cell phone. Still she has got 40 minutes. She starts the car engine and presses the accelerator just to park her car in the hospital parking.

She gets out of the car and lock it. Then she bolts in the hospital and ask the receptionist of the whereabouts of Mr. Hall.

“He is taken to ICU, 4th floor, towards the right.” The receptionist smiles reassuringly. Caroline nods and gets in the lift. She reaches 4th floor and finds Klaus sitting on a chair in the waiting area. She hurries towards him but stops in her tracks, when she takes in the disheveled appearance of Klaus. His hair all messed up of running hands through them, his tousled shirt and pained expressions in his eyes.

Somehow he senses her presence in close approximation, so he looks up to meet her eyes. Her eyes carrying so many emotions at one time, pain, hurt, fear, care and… a new emotion, he has never noticed in her eyes. Tears pouring from those beautiful brown eyes, as if telling him, ‘I understand how you feel’. Without giving any second thoughts, she runs in his arms and he hugs her back, both crying and reassuring each other.

“He is… going to be… fine…” she says between sobs. Klaus barely nods. After staying there, hugging, for few moments, they pull apart. She wipes away his tears with her thumb, “I have called my dad, and they will be here very soon. You need something?”

Klaus shook his head softly not meeting her eyes. Doctor comes out of the ICU, both of them rush towards the doctor.

“Klaus, I have already told you, he is very weak now. We are trying our best but we are afraid he may not be able to make it this time. But we…”

“What do you freaking mean ‘he may not make it’? He will make it! DO WHATEVER YOU CAN! I want him out of this foul place the soonest!” Caroline cuts the doctor off and grabs his apron.

“Easy there kid! I am in this profession for the past eight years and Danny is my patient. Me and my team are already working the best we can.” He then turns his gaze to Klaus, who stand there pale and dumbstruck, his mind processing the doctor’s words. Doctor’s gaze turns soft, “Klaus, there is something we still can do. A new heart surgeon, Mr. Nelson Parker, can be of great help in this case. Luckily, he is in town. But despite of our trying to reach him, we are not able to connect to him.”
