"But, what about the lines we made you to write about each other?” Ada makes a feeble attempt to assure herself that all that she has heard is nothing but a cruel joke.
Caroline knows it’s her place to tell her the truth so she says, “We had discussed it all the night before. We planned it out and rest you know.”
“But he did know your favourite singer!”
“Ada, I am sorry sweety you had to learn of all of this. But we had met many times before deciding to get married. So somehow it stayed with him and he told you my favorite singer.” Caroline gestures towards Klaus, who stands tense and motionless.
Ada breathes out loudly and stoops her shoulder. Caroline moves forth to place her hand on her friend’s shoulder, but Ada jerks her hand off. “Don’t even try. How could you lie to me Caroline? You kept me in dark for so long. Caroline, do you know what hurts most? It’s your own friend lying to you. I wonder what happened today, if it had not happened, you would not have told me anything.” And a tear flows freely from the eyelashes of Ada.
“I agree with Ada.” Mark stands up, “Whatever you did, you both did,” Mark exhales sharply, “is your matter. So let be it. If you don’t want us in your lives, you should have told already. Why play the game of bestfriends?”
“Not you too Mark!” Klaus sounds exasperated, “What we did was meant to be a secret and we were going to tell you about it.”
Mark gives a bitter laugh, “When? When Klaus? I’ve known you for too long and I know if you really trusted me you’d have told me already.” With that he moves towards Ada, holds her hand and they leave.
Though they had left long ago, Caroline and Klaus stand rooted to their place. Silence falls heavy on their shoulder.
Their eyes meet for the faintest duration, and they see “it”. They see “it” hanging in each other’s eyes. The faintest hint of “it”. And then Caroline fails to hold “it” any longer and laughter bubbles up in her stomach. Klaus tries to hold his composure and tries to remain serious at the loss of his best friend. But he too gives in to the temptation of the contagious laughter of Caroline.
They laugh until tears flow freely and their stomach hurts. “Oh my god!” Caroline exclaims, “What just happened? We just lost our friends and still we are laughing.”
Klaus stops and turns serious, “We have embarrassed them. We have hurt them. And that is why they left.” But explodes laughing. “I’ve never behaved so contrary! I am sad, trust me I really am.”
Caroline’s laughter slows down a bit and she gives a genuine smile, “I know I am sad too. We’ll just give them some time to cool off a bit and then convince them to be our friends again.” She says and lays on the sofa upside down.
Klaus laughs and follows the pursuit, “The view is better here. Upside down.”
“It is right! And no one believed when I tell them.”
“Well I do! And now the question is how are we going to convince them?”
“Whatever we do, we have to do the same, so they’ll know we have given it a thought and we really miss them. We can try by sending them flowers…” Caroline says thinking deeply.
“Well in my case, flowers won’t help. How about front seats to finals of football match?”
“I don’t think Ada would appreciate it. How about coupons to spa?”
“Not helpful enough… A stripper? Male for Ada and female for Mark?”
“Nasty but it won’t look like we truly are sorry. May be we’ll save it for the bachelor party when they’ll grow balls and marry each other.”
Klaus laughs, “I am tired already.”
“So I am. I can’t think of anything else. I feel like crawling to Ada’s feet and begging for her forgiveness.”
“Me too. It seems easy.” Klaus gives a crooked smile, “We are hopeless!” He declares happily. “I suffered a heartbreak today, a betrayal from the woman I loved and it seems to be the happiest day of my life. Telling them the truth about us was more like looking back at some of the best memories I’ve ever had. Do you remember when I came…” his words stop when he finds Caroline dozing off. He smiles, “You’re crazy. Cute but hell lot of crazy. Cutzy” then he gives a light laugh and stands up.
After blood reaches back to his feet and he finds himself stable. He picks Caroline up and takes her to the bedroom, their bedroom. He smiles.
