"Oh, you must be Billy, right?" Uncle Allen said as he showed up at his door. He had a textbook and notebook in hand.
"Yeah, it was my birthday yesterday. But I'm having my party, or Bar Mitzvah this Saturday. I'm here to help Robin with math."
"Oh, bless your heart. Him and I both know how hard that subject is." He opened the door for him to come in. Billy put the books on his side and on the couch as he waited for Robin.
"I promised to help him yesterday so..."
He came downstairs, not wearing his usual bandana.
"It's winter, how are you not freezing in your house and wearing shorts?"
"I don't know, I guess I'm just built different."
Billy chuckled.
"Hopefully your brain is too."
Robin smiled, "I hope so too."
Billy took a deep breath in and out, "So, what topic are you exactly struggling on?"
Robin raked his brain, "I think percent word problems are the most difficult for me. Word problems just suck in general."
"They definitely can be difficult for most. But this is why we don't do stuff in our head, Rob!"
He looked away in embarrassment.
"Finney's been telling me you haven't been writing things down. That's the worst mistake you can make in math. Even a 'brainiac' like me has to jot notes."
"I know, but the way Mr. Johnson makes it sound, it's like I have to write down every little detail."
"Yeah, he's not exactly the best teacher out there."
"Damn right."
...
"So, you're cross-multiply these two numbers." He explained while solving the problem with him.
"Oh, so you make a bridge?"
"What?"
"Look, there's three lines, the first one, the equal and the second. Once you write the numbers, it looks like a bridge."
"You're right, it kind of does look like a bridge. That's a good way to remember."
Robin smiled in pride, and so did Billy.
"Do you wanna stay for a bit longer? I mean you don't have to if you don't want to but-"
"I'd love too, Robin." He tilted his head and smiled with his lips.
"Do you mind if I set the books on the nightstand?"
"No, go ahead. And then meet me in my room."
He grew more excited than he'd like to admit upon hearing that command.
Once he was in the room, he found a poster of Batman and Robin from the DC comics. Along with some other posters of what seemed to be celebrities, most of them Hispanic.
"I didn't know you liked reading comics." He picked up one of the volumes, clearly yellowed from age.
"Oh yeah, my dad was a big fan of 'em. Why do you think my name is Robin?"
