I sigh.

There are piles and piles of books on the tables we've occupied. Piles. And we haven't found anything that will actually help us cover our scent. The closest we've come is an old werewolf history book. Hundreds of years ago, when all of the packs were at war with each other, one pack came out on top. The Wild Fangs. They found out how to hide their scent, and they used this to protect their pack. They have the lowest count of losses and the least involvement in the war.

It sounds like they never wanted to be part of the war. All they wanted to do was protect their pack, and that's exactly what they did.

Only, there's no mention of how they managed to hide their scents in the book, so it's completely useless to us.

"Would it be worth it to try and reach out to the current alpha and see if he knows anything?" Vinnie asks.

Maddox shakes his head, running a hand through his hair. He's done it so much today, the dirty blonde strands are sticking up all over the place. Do I even need to say how sexy it looks and how much it's turning me on?

"The Wild Fangs have been off the grid for centuries now. No pack has seen or heard from them since the war," Maddox explains.

"They never stopped hiding their scent," I conclude, and Maddox nods.

"Rumor is they also have a way to completely hide their lands. Someone could walk right through it and never know."

"Kinda like a human seeing the Hogwarts grounds?" Kaitlyn asks.

"Or Wakanda?" Vinnie adds.

"Something like that," Maddox confirms. "So trying to ask them anything is out of the question. We don't have the time, resources, or even an idea of where to start."

"So we're back at square one," I say, feeling defeated. Maddox puts an arm around me and pulls my chair closer to his, and I lay my head on his shoulder for some comfort.

I feel like a failure.

"Let's call it a day for now and head home," Maddox says, a finality in his tone, and no on argues.

We all start putting the books back where they belong, and we're heading home within ten minutes. I can't stop thinking about the hunter, and my mind is racing with any possible solution. Even with every single odd stacked against us, there has to be something. The hunter has to have some kind of weakness.

Maddox, bless the mate bond, seems to know just how stressed out I am at the moment. His hand never leaves me body, whether it's holding mine or an arm wrapped around me. The physical contact of my mate does wonders to help calm me down a little. No where near to being completely calm, but enough where I don't go on a rampage to try and hunt down the hunter myself.

Once we're back at the house, Molly asks, "What do we want for dinner tonight?"

"Comfort food," I sigh.

"Cheeseburgers it is. Mols and I will be back in a half hour," Vinnie says, and the two of them head right back out the door to go to the grocery store.

"I'm going to take a shower," I say, and there's a collective murmur of agreements that Thay and Kaitlyn also are going to take one. I lead the way upstairs, and we branch off to our own rooms. Maddox closes our bedroom door behind me, closely following behind into the bathroom. I reach into the shower and turn it on.

When I turn to face Maddox, he's smirking at me, and I know right away he's going to get me back for teasing him this morning.

How could I resist?
