" Oh my god Nick." Matt slammed the water glass onto the counter. " You're so fucking loud! Do you ever stop talking?"
" Jeez, Matt." Chris laughed lightly. " Who pissed in your cheerios?" The TV blared loudly, the sound of fake laughter further angering Matt.
" Wow!" He spun to face Chris. " You're seriously taking his side on this? Why am I not surprised? You could both talk me to death."
" You know what?" Nick yelled from where he was sitting at the counter. " It's not our fault you're a massive fucking stick in the mud! You get all mad when we talk but if we didn't we'd just sit in awkward silence all the fucking time!"
" I can't get a single fucking second alone in this house." Matt snapped back, striding over to the door. " Everytime it gets quiet for a second someone starts arguing about some shit-"
" Ok, then leave!" Chris bellowed, shutting off the TV. " It's not like we want you here anyways! Jeez."
" That's exactly what I'm planning on doing-" Matt grabbed his keys from the door. " Don't come looking for me when you feel bad." He turned and slammed the door behind him. " Fucking idiots." He muttered to himself as he opened the minivan, pulled out of the driveway and started down the road. He wasn't sure where he was going, but it didn't matter. He just needed to get away from his brothers.

" What's his problem?" Chris grumbled, getting up to grab a bagel.
" Don't know." Nick didn't look up from his phone. " Couldn't care less." But a sense of uneasiness rested in his chest. A tightness not unlike fear.
" Do you think we should-" Chris started, pulling out his phone.
Nick shook his head, ignoring his intuition screaming. " He's fine. He'll be back in a couple minutes and it'll be fine."
Chris nodded. They'd never fought like this before. Not to this extreme. What if Matt didn't come back. If he just decided he was done and moved out. Judging by his anger, it wasn't too far-fetched.
What if...
What if...
What if...

Anger clouded Matt's vision as he drove recklessly. Normally, he was a careful, anxious driver. But not today. Today the images of Nick's loud mouth and annoying words flooded his mind. Chris's stupid laugh and-
Wait. Why was he thinking like this? He loved Chris's smile, especially when he was the cause of it. Nick was hilarious.
Most importantly, they were his brothers.
" Damn it." Matt whispered, replaying their fight. How could he have said those things?
If Matt had taken a second to think, to plan his route home, maybe he would've seen the car zooming from the left, speeding to reach the green light.
Instead, Matt indicated left and without a second though, pulled into the intersection.
The last thing he remembered before the dull gray haze was the horrific crash of metal on metal.
                                      *
" What?" The word was breathless, spoken by someone near hysteria. Nick covered his mouth with his hand, eyes widening. " No. No! No, no nonononono..."
" Sir?" The sterile voice on the other side of the phone said. " I need you to stay calm-"
" Calm? Calm!" Nick's voice rose to the point of almost screaming. " How the fuck am I supposed to stay calm when my brother's been in a car crash and is in the hospital?!"
" What?" Chris rounded the corner. His heart climbed into his throat. " What did you just say Nick?"
" I need you-" The voice on the phone came again.
" Yes, yeah." Nick interrupted, frantically waving at Chris to go get Marylou. He covered the speaker with his hand. " Get mom right now and get in the car."
" U-uh ok." Chris had never heard Nick like this. He sprinted down the hall and up the stairs, stomach rolling in fear.
Could Matt really have-
    Could he be-
" Mom!" Chris yelled, banging on her bedroom door. " We need to go to the hospital. Matt's been in an accident. Mom-"
Maylou slammed open the door, eyes wild. " What?" She gasped. Her lips thinned to a white line.
" We need to go- they won't tell us what condition he's in until we get there-"
" Yes, yes." Maylou snatched her car keys and the pair ran back downstairs.
Nick was already off the phone, anxiously grabbing ID and Matt's medical card.
" Let's go." Marylou took control, hustling her panicking sons into the car. " He's going to be fine. He's gonna be fine-" She repeated those words over and over, a mantra to convince herself.
Chris and Nick clung to each other in the backseat, minds awhirl.
What if the last thing I said to my brother was that I didn't want him here?
What were we even fighting about?
    Something stupid, I'm sure.
    Something that was my fault.
    Was this my fault?
    It was, wasn't it?
    Oh my god.
How can I live with this agony-
The car pulled into a parking spot. The three jumped out and made their way anxiously to the emergency room. Marylou went to talk to someone who nodded gravely at the name Mathew Sturniolo.
" Yes, he got here about half an hour ago. We just need to stabilize him and then you can see him-"
The rest of the words disappeared into the horrible thoughts in Chris and Nick's minds.
What if...
    What if...
    What if...
The wait seemed to take eons. Eras. The ticking minutes filled with shaky fingers on cheap waiting chairs. Almost screams rising in throats. Scared eyes, pounding hearts. Terrible, consuming thoughts-
" Boys?" Marylou's voice cut through the white noise. " We can see him now."
They made their way down the hall, around the corner, to room 302.
    What would he look like?
Bloody? Mangled? Broken?
The door crept open, the tension nearly destroying the two triplets. Until-
" Matt!" The word was uttered in unison as Nick and Chris rushed to the bed.
" Hey guys." Matt replied weakly. Aside from a couple nasty bruises and scratches, he looked alright. Whole.
    " I'm sorry-"
    " Are you ok-"
    " What happened-"
The three spoke at the same time, then laughed quietly.
" Matt." Nick savored the word, grateful for the life it still held.
" I don't know what we would have done if- well... if... you know." Chris said shakily, climbing into the bed beside Matt. " I'm sorry I was such an asshole-"
" Me too." Nick cut in.
    " Me three." Matt agreed.
" Oh, my boys." Marylou bent to embrace Matt gently. Tears shone in her eyes.
    " How'd it happen?"
Matt sighed, rubbing his temples. " Got T-boned. In an intersection. I was really lucky."
" That fucker-" Nick started, then glanced at Marylou. " I mean- that horrible-"
" No." Marylou laughed, tears still dripping down her face. " That fucker."
The four leaned together, nearly frantic in the wake of their fear.
Matt was discharged later that day, with the directions to take it easy.
Chris and Nick did everything they could to make him comfortable and happy in the following days.
