To be honest, Matt couldn't tell when the whisper had turned to a roar. When the occasion thought of ' Maybe I need to lose weight' turned to skipping meals and spending hours in front of the mirror, hyper analyzing himself. He wasn't sure when it had officially started, but he knew that now to refuse the voices, the demands, would be impossible.

Utterly laughable.

" What do you want from Mcdonalds?" Nick demanded from the backseat.
Chris thought for a second. " I'll have fries and a sweet tea."
     " Matt?"
" Huh?" Matt answered, focused on maneuvering through the drive-through. " Oh- um I'm alright. Ate earlier."
Chris and Nick both turn to stare at Matt.
" Who are you and what have you done to Matt Sturniolo?" Chris reaches over to attempt to feel his forehead.
" Dude, stop." Matt swatted his hand away, smiling weakly. " I'm just not hungry."
They drove under a street light, the harsh light illuminating the hollows in Matt's cheeks and dark under eye circles.
" But, you know, it's kinda the point of our car videos to eat and say funny shit." Nick stated, eyeing Matt.
" Nick, I really couldn't care less. I'm not hungry so I'm not eating."
       " Whatever."
They proceeded to order from the Mcdonalds and go and film their car video.
*
It was about 2:30 AM when their car finally pulled into the driveway. Matt slowly parked and turned off the engine.
The three of them sat in the dark for a couple seconds, the air thick with questions.
" So Matt... we should probably talk about what happened-" Chris started, sharing a look with Nick.
" Actually, I'm super tired, so I'm going to bed." Matt cut in, running a hand through his hair, then down his face.
Nick and Chris were left alone in the dark car as Matt got out and shut the door.
" He's definitely hiding something." Nick whispered.
" Yeah. He's been acting like this for months. We'll talk to him about it tomorrow."
                      *

While Matt was tired beyond words, when he finally arrived at his bedroom, he didn't jump in bed. Instead, he opened his closet, found the mirror inside, and began to study himself.
Ugly.
Fat.
Too big.
Not skinny enough.
You'll never be accepted with your brothers if you look like this.
You know what will change that.
You know what you have to do.

Finally, when Matt physically couldn't hold his head up anymore, he slumped into bed to a fitful sleep.
*
Nick was awakened at disgusting o'clock by the sound of hushed footsteps in the kitchen. His eyes cracked open against the dark.
The footsteps continued, heading for the front door. Were they being burgled? Was the person armed?
Nick, full of worry, pulled himself out of bed and quietly cracked open his door. A figure was moving merely feet in front of him.
The silhouette of the person seemed too small to be a burglar. Nick felt his heart climb to his throat.
" Hello?" He whispered, inching out from behind the door.
" Shit!" Came an all too familiar voice. " Oh my fucking God Nick. You scared me!"
Slowly, Nick's eyes adjusted to the dim lighting. In front of him stood Matt, hand clutching his heart, hair hanging messily around his eyes.
" Matt? What the fuck are you doing up at-" Nick checked his watch. " Five-thirty in the morning?"
" Um," Matt's eyes glanced at the door, almost within reach. " I- I couldn't sleep. I'm going for a run."
Nick felt his heart drop. He had a feeling he knew what was going on here. But... he couldn't cause a scene without Chris being there, and he couldn't exactly forbid Matt from going.
The brothers locked eyes for a moment. Maybe, somewhere deep down, Matt knew he was caught. His eyes hardened with anger and he looked away.
" Well, bye." And with that Matt turned and exited the house.
Without a look back.

Chris woke to the smell of eggs and slightly burnt toast. He climbed out of bed, starving, hoping that Nick or Matt had made breakfast for him too.
But when he emerged into the kitchen, only Nick was sitting at the counter, deep in thought.
" Good morning, Nicky." Chris sing-songed, jokingly messing up Nick's hair and sliding into the seat next to him. He grabbed a piece of toast from the counter and began to munch loudly.
       " Chris?"
Chris looked up worriedly. He'd only heard that tone from Nick a couple times, and none of them had been good. It sounded fragile, glass cracking at the edges.
       " Yeah?"
" I'm worried about Matt. Like really worried." Tears began to prick the corners of his eyes.
" Yeah, me too." Chris muttered. " Where is he anyways?"
" That's the thing." Nick sniffed. " I saw him this morning- at about five-thirty. He said he was going for a run. He hasn't come back yet."
Chris quickly checked the time on the oven.
8:36 AM.
" Shit," He muttered. " Shit, shit, shit. That's like three hours! You don't think he ran for that-"
He was cut off by the door peeking open.
Standing in the doorway, swaying slightly, was a deathly pale Matt.
" Dude." Nick jumped up quickly and grasped Matt's arm. " You look like shit."
" Feel like it, too." Matt muttered, eyes rolling backwards in his head. He mumbled something that sounded suspiciously like ' m' dizzy.'
Suddenly Matt's legs gave out, leaving Nick staggering to support his weight from plummeting to the ground.
Chris quickly joined them and grabbed Matt by the other arm. Together they half dragged, half led Matt to the couch.
" He's fully out." Chris groaned, snapping his fingers in front of Matt's closed eyes. He ran his hand over Matt's back " Get some ice, he's sweating a whole fucking river."
Nick practically ran to the fridge and returned with a bag of ice. He pressed it to Matt's neck.
Matt's eyes began to flutter slightly.
" Chris?" He slurred. " Nick?"
" We're here Matty. Just relax, ok? You're going to be fine." Nick slid onto the couch on the other side of Matt, gently running his fingers through his sweaty hair.
Matt nodded slightly, eyes still closed tight.
" When was the last time you ate, Matt?" Chris asked softly. " This is very important."
" U-um." Still woozy from fainting, Matt's eyebrows scrunched together. " Two days ago. No, three. I had some soup on Sunday night."
Suddenly his eyes shot open in fear. " I-I shouldn't have told you that."
Chris and Nick watched him carefully. Matt noticed the unnatural sheen of unshed tears in both of his brother's eyes.
" We're glad you told us." Nick soothed. " We're going to help you, ok? This can't continue."
Chris nodded in agreement. " It's unhealthy, Matt. We want our brother back."
Matt felt tears come to his eyes too. What then came out of his mouth was not what he had expected.
" T-thank you. I can't do this anymore. I want out but it seems impossible. Please don't tell Mom and Dad, ok? I don't want them to worry more."
Nick bit his lip in thought, glancing at Chris. " We won't tell them for now. But if you don't put in the effort to get better we're gonna be forced to tell them, ok?"
" Yeah. We'll be with you the whole way, ok Matt?" Chris agreed. " It'll be ok."

And for the first time in months, Matt believed that.
