The slap of the puck hitting the ice echoed around the chilly arena.
Matt, who was playing center, swiftly reached to gain control of the puck, before the other guy could. He skated a couple of strides then passed the puck up the ice to Nate. Chris, who was on the other side, blazed past him, calling for the pass from right in front of the net. Matt could see the goalie eyeing the puck, carefully assuming a position to save it.
He could see what was about to happen like a story. Nate would pass to Chris, who'd pretend to shoot right then shoot left. But what Chris couldn't see was that the goalie was expecting this play. The only way to get the goal would be-
Without thinking, Matt skated up, brushing past a player defending another one of his teammates.
Chris had the puck, he lined up, pretended to shoot, then quickly switched to the other side and shot into the bottom left of the net.
It was a good shot. Strong, hard, straight.
It would've gone in if the goalie's leg had been slightly less bent.
Instead, the puck hit his leg and rebounded-
Straight to Matt, who was waiting on the right side of the net.
Time seemed to stand still as he aimed,
Lifted his stick,
And shot!
Chris opened his mouth to scream in excitement, until suddenly, a bigger boy slammed into Matt, sending him crashing into the boards. Chris's scream quickly turned from joy to fear.
Matt's body cracked into the boards, his head slamming into the ground.
A piercing whistle filled the air as the ref raced over to Matt's side.
Rage dulled all of Chris's other senses. How dare that kid touch, let alone body-check Matt.
He hadn't done anything wrong.
Before he could think, he was skating after the guy.
" Hey!" He yelled. " Hey!"
" What?" The kid responded, turning around in annoyance.
" You better have a fucking hospital plan because you're gonna need it." Chris growled, a voice that didn't even sound like his. " What the fuck was that? You're gonna be fucking sorry you touched my brother-"
Faintly, Chris could hear Nick fighting on the bench to get onto the ice.
" Calm down, dude." The other player rolled his eyes. " It's not that serious. No need to go all alpha. Geez."
Chris's hands squeezed into fists so tight his knuckles cracked. " I'm gonna-"
" Hey! Chris, calm down." A voice came in his ear. A hand was holding him back from the guy by his jersey.
Nick.
Slowly the buzzing in Chris's ears quieted. He could see the ref kneeling next to Matt, asking him questions. Their coaches were leaning over the barrier, watching Matt with worried faces.
" Believe me." Nick addressed the other player. " I'm not stopping my brother from beating your ass for you. But we need him for the next game. He can't be kicked out. Although if I see you after the game," A dangerous glint entered Nick's eyes. " You'd better run."
Chris broke free of Nick's grip to rush to the crumpled figure on the ground.
" Matt!" Chris yelled, frantically pushing people away to get to his brother. He could hear Nick come to a stop beside him.
" Oh my god, Matt! Are you ok?"
Slowly the figure on the ground turned to curl up into the fetal position.
" Matt?" Nick asked.
" N'ck? Chr's?" Matt groaned softly. " Shit."
" Everyone move away from him!" The ref commanded. " You too, boys."
" No way." Chris stood to face the ref. " He's our brother."
" Well..." The ref thought for a moment. " I guess you could help him off the ice."
Nick and Chris put their arms around Matt, helping him stand up slowly. Matt gasped in pain at the motion, cradling his head.
" Ok, it's ok." Chris wrapped his arm around Matt to support him more.
" Mhm." He hissed urgently. " Ribs-"
Chris quickly adjusted his grip to avoid hurting his brother anymore.
" It's ok, sweetie." Nick soothed, taking most of Matt's dead weight. " We're almost at the bench, ok? You're gonna be just fine."
" Nicky?" He muttered.
" Yeah?"
" 'Feel sick..."
Chris and Nick glanced at each other, concerned.
They eventually steadied Matt onto the bench at the side of the game. Once he was off the ice, the game continued.
" Matt?" Head coach Gary kneeled down to look him in the eyes. " What hurts the most?"
" W-what happened?" Matt mumbled. " My head. Oh my god, it hurts so bad."
Nick grabbed one of Matt's hands while Chris gently eased his helmet off Matt's head.
" You're gonna be fine, honey." Nick comforted.
" Ok." Coach Gary's eyebrows furrowed in concern. Do you feel anything else? Dizzy? Hazy? Nauseous-"
The last question was answered a second later as Matt doubled over and threw up, mouthful after mouthful of his lunch.
" Shit." Chris swore, rubbing his back. " Breath Matty."
Matt gagged a couple more times, clutching his side in agony.
" He said something about his ribs hurting, too." Nick supplied, sympathetically watching his brother.
" Matt? Can you tell me today's date?" Coach Gary asked.
" U-um. I-I'm not sure. The third...?"
" Your full name?"
" Matthew uh- Bernard Sturniolo."
" And who's next to you right now?"
" My brothers. Chris and Nick." The words are quiet but he sounds certain of the fact. Unlike his other answers.
" Alright. I'm pretty sure he is concussed." Coach Gary peered at Matt's eyes for a moment then nodded. " Yep, his pupils are very dilated."
" And his ribs?" Nick asked anxiously.
" Mm, either dislocated or broken. I'd have to take a look to know for sure."
" So what should we do?"
" Take him home and make sure there are no loud noises or bright lights. I'd say wrap his ribs or go to the hospital. No activity- mental or physical- for at least two days, or until he feels better. Then slowly start easing back into it."
" Ok." Chris and Nick nodded.
They knew they would take care of Matt for as long as necessary.
