Levi frowned at the soot around the base of one of the many fireplaces in the library, getting down on his knees to scrub it away with a sponge and the special cleaning solution he'd obtained from the palace's supply closet. As his hand touched the stone, he was tempted to pause there for a minute, satisfied by the cool sensation on his warm skin. He'd been feeling slightly feverish all day – not enough to keep him from his work – but he was starting to wonder if souls could get sick in the afterlife. He'd have to ask Erwin when he next saw him.
He'd been living in Athena's palace for nearly a month, and from what he'd observed, it truly was as nice as Erwin had claimed on the day Levi arrived. In many ways, he received similar amenities to those he'd been allotted by the military, only on a nicer scale – a private bedroom and bathroom, plenty of food and clothes, even an allowance of spending money and designated free time. He also had the opportunity to travel and visit his old comrades, and he'd been spending a lot of time at Hanji's apothecary in the nearby village, somehow gaining a higher tolerance for her endless prattle.
While he'd been working, he'd gotten to know Athena, given her frequent and long-lasting visits to the library. Levi left her alone for most of it, respecting the fact that she probably didn't want to be interrupted while she read – and besides, he had cleaning to do. However, she always made a point to speak to him when she entered or exited the library, asking how his day was going and whether he'd gotten a chance to read anything new. Occasionally, his answer to the latter question was affirmative, and then they were able to exchange their thoughts on the book – because of course, Athena had already read it.
He knew, now, that he could trust her. Moreover, he even considered her to be something like a friend, as much as one could be friends with a goddess. Erwin had been right – she was an incredibly kind person. She was also intelligent and encouraging, and she never made Levi feel lesser for the things he didn't know. In fact, she always seemed grateful for whatever assessments he brought to the conversation – as if, impossibly, he could think of things she couldn't.
It was to Athena that his thoughts unconsciously turned while he repeatedly scrubbed the soot on the floor, his narrowed eyes silently commanding it to disappear. If the goddess kept to her schedule, she'd be here soon, wanting to read in front of the fireplace – and he'd be damned if he let her see this filth. If only it could just –
He gasped, hands dropping the sponge and flying to his abdomen, which had suddenly begun to ache. In the next second, he felt a strange warmth spreading from that spot, flowing all the way out to his fingers, his toes. And it kept getting hotter. So hot, he was already becoming delirious. Almost like...
Oh.
Shit.
Levi groaned as a sudden, yawning emptiness opened inside him, leaving him desperate. He pressed his forehead against the cool stone lining the fireplace, trying to focus. He knew this had to be his heat, but he didn't know what to do about it. Stupidly, he'd put off thinking about it during this past month, wanting to pretend it didn't exist. Stupid, stupid, stupid...
"Levi?" Erwin questioned from a short distance away, and the captain froze, his eyes going wide.
Erwin was an alpha. He'd be susceptible to Levi's pheromones – and standing this close, he certainly would've smelled them by now. Could Levi still trust him? Was Erwin strong enough to resist the temptation?
"Alright, it's alright," Erwin murmured while he knelt next to Levi. His voice sounded strained, as if whatever he was doing – or not doing – required immense effort. "I promise I won't harm you. I'm just going to help you get back to your room safely, and then I'll leave you alone. Alright?"
