Day 5
"He cannot come with us, he is dangerous, we don't know where he came from, why is he alone? No one travels alone anymore!" Jake was furious. He had every right to be, he'd just lost his girlfriend, death was more commonplace than ever now but that didn't mean it wasn't still painful, heart-wrenching, the kind of pain that makes you want to scream until your voice breaks.
"But he saved Siobhan, and the supplies, he could be useful" Brennen wasn't usually the voice of reason, but here we were.
This was my moment to vouch for him, to tell them how he'd come to my rescue without hesitation for his own safety, when we were in the store Maddie and I could've both been bitten, he had no idea what he was getting into, but he did anyway, almost fearlessly...
"Without him I'd be dead." I met Jakes livid gaze and softened my expression, trying to tell him wordlessly that there was something about this mystery man that I couldn't put my finger on. He wasn't a threat, I knew that. I'd spent enough time around "bad men" Colby wasn't anything like that. He stood there reticent, listening to us debating his case without even putting forward his own. This only cemented my trust in him, people with something to hide usually do all the talking. He wasn't saying a word, just listening, and watching.
"What about Maddie?" Jake muttered dejectedly.
"I'm really sorry for your loss"
We all looked to the quiet stranger; this is the first time he'd spoke since the store.
