Alarm. Monday morning. I rolled over and almost fell out of bed, nearly stepping on to my laptop that I'd put there at some stupid hour last night. I rubbed the heel of my palm into my eyes trying to rub some of the sleep from them. Early morning sunlight was streaming through the curtains into my loft in downtown LA. I pulled a hairband off my wrist and stumbled to the bathroom to inspect the wonders that are my bed hair.
I flicked on the TV to watch the morning news as I poured milk on my cereal, then flicking the kettle and then wandering into the lounge so I could hear the News. I perched on the end of the coffee table and listened to the Newscaster "There have been multiple reports of several murders and other unrelated random acts of violence throughout the night, there has been no official statement from the Police but we will continue to bring you news, as it happens..." I heard the kettle boil and wandered through to the kitchen to make myself a cup of tea. My phone buzzed on the counter and I picked it up, sliding the bar across. It was my best friend.
"Hey Brennen, what's up" I mumbled whilst taking a mouthful of tea.
"Hey Siobhan-Rae, have you seen the news today? The world has offically gone mad" I heard him chuckle.
"Yeah, I know man. I'm a little scared. What do you think it is? Gang violence, terrorism or zombies?" I laughed a little at the last one.
"You've been watching too much 'Walking Dead, everything's zombies with you"
"Yeah, yeah, whatever. Are you going to come over tonight? I was thinking of just chilling out, maybe we could watch a film? Nothing too crazy, I just didn't wanna do it on my own and you are my best buddy"
"I'd like that, I'll see what I'm doing, shall I call Jake?" I heard Brennen smiling as he said the man's name.
"No, I thought I'd leave him out. It's not like he's the third musketeer or anything" I laughed to myself. During the latter part of my schooling; Brennen, Jake and I had been the three musketeers. We had been inseparable. Once we had graduated we worried that we may lose touch, but due to the nature of all of our jobs, two Youtubers and a Make-up Artist, we had all stayed fairly close.
"Musketeers assemble!" Brennen shouted down the phone.
"...Victims appear to have been mauled by their attackers...torn apart...police are warning people that if they see any suspicious or unusual behaviour to not approach them, and call 911" I heard chunks of the News drifting through, with my phone still pressed to my ear I hurried into the lounge and watched the rest of the bulletin.
"Brennen, I'm a little scared. I don't think I'm going to work today, are you busy?" I bit the inside of my lip. Even if these were random attacks, I didn't want to go outside, not alone anyway.
"No, I was planning on chilling today. I'll pick Jake up on the way, see you in around an hour? Stay safe dude"
"You too Brenny" I smiled, using the nickname I'd given during high school in an attempt to reassure myself.
