"The government have now declared a nationwide State of Emergency, citizens are being advised to stay indoors, with all doors and windows locked, covered and secured if possible" The newscaster read the script with a tone that almost condemned us. I looked to Brennen who was sat beside me and then to Jake who was sat the other side of the room with his girlfriend Maddie sat beside him. She looked close to tears, Jake held her hand and squeezed it. "So...what'd do we do?" She stuttered. I looked at Brennen, who for once in his life, wasn't saying anything. Even Jake looked bleak. I shook my head, I didn't trust the government at all, and if what was happened, was happening, then the government would be no better at saving the world, then we were at saving each other.

"Well for a start, we're not going to just sit here, and wait for all this to blow over, we need to get out of the city, and quickly" I looked my friends, they stared back wordless. After 5 minutes of deafening silence, and nothing but the occasional siren and the sombre murmur of the news.  "Siobhan-Rae is right, we need to get out. The city isn't safe anymore" Brennen looked at me. We had no idea what was going to happen in the next 12 to 24 hours, but neither of us wanted to stick around to find out.

"Maddie, come with me, we can go pack clothes and essential non-food items, guys, find anything tinned, packed or dried, and put it into the storage boxes, we're leaving here in an hour" I walked out of the room and Maddie followed, I walked down the hall and into my bedroom, I opened the wardrobe and looked at all my clothes, thankfully, I wasn't a particularly girly girl and most of my clothes were jeans, t-shirts and hoodies. I grabbed a fistful of hangers and began to pull the clothes off them. I pulled out a case from under my bed and shoved the clothes in.

"What do you think is gonna happen to the city?" Maddie asked her eyes full of fear and worry.

"I don't know Mads, but I'm not about to hang around to find out. We'll stay together, we'll get through this" I smiled at her, wishing I believed what I was saying.
