Day 4:
"Brennen, stop the bus, I need to pee" Jake yelled through the bus.
"There's a toilet." He yelled back.
"Not happening, I'll get it on my shoes" He whined.
I was sat across from Jake and Maddie in the back lounge of the bus that Brennen had thankfully managed to acquire with a lot of sweet talking. I vaguely heard Brennen mumble something that sounded like;
"I'll piss on your fucking head in a minute" and then shake his head and stop the bus at the side of the freeway. Jake bundled passed me and then practically jumped out of the bus heading onto the grass verge to relieve himself. I heard him whistling and smiled to myself. I walked to the front and tapped Brennen on the shoulder.
"We might as well stretch our legs" I smiled. He unbuckled his seatbelt and got up. I waved at Maddie and she got up as well, following myself and Brennen out of the bus. I walked with Maddie to the side of the freeway and into a small wooded area, it was dusk but the moon was out so everything was pretty well lit. I heard a roar of jet engines then saw three sleek black planes that looked like fighter jets fly over towards the city.
"Brennen!! Jake!!" I yelled behind me as I jogged over the hill half dragging Maddie with me. On the crest of the hill, you could look down over the city. I watched in horror as I saw what looked like liquid fire being dropped onto the city in front of us. Brennen and Jake appeared by our sides and I stared at him and then back to the city, grabbing his hand subconsciously for comfort. I saw Maddie mirror my action.
"Brennen, what is that?" I stammered.
"Napalm... I think" He mumbled not taking his eyes off the fiery landscape in front of us.
"No, they wouldn't, they couldn't do that, the city is still full of people they'd be burning them alive" Tears began to stream down my face as thick acrid smoke began to rise out of the city. Fierier orange liquid fell until the planes had disappeared back into the night as quickly as they had arrived leaving a trail of chaos and fire in their wake. Although we were relatively safe, I stood on the hill clinging to my best friend as if my life depended on it. I could hear Maddie gently crying and Jake just shaking his head and murmuring "How could they do this" over and over again.
The city continued to burn, till the sky was nothing but acrid smoke and yellow, orange and red flames. I could hear sirens, I could picture the chaos, people knowing nothing until it was too late, till the fire had engulfed them. I shut my mind to the thoughts. We had to be strong, we had to get away from the city, and quickly. I stopped crying and sniffed, wiping my eyes on my sleeve. I looked to my friends, their faces lit in the deathly glow.
"I think this means we're on our own from now on," I said turning towards the highway and walking down the hill.
