Chapter 1

I wake up and take a shower. I get dressed before I get the kids awake and go down stairs to make breakfast.

After breakfast the kids come downstairs dressed and eat. But when I see Ellis come downstairs she's walking all clumsily with her eyes closed her hair all in a knot.

"Ellis, I told you to get ready," I say.

"I'm too tired, mama," she says sitting at the table. "have you seen Scout?" Amelia asks as she walks into the kitchen.

"No, I just woke up. why don't you know where he is?" I ask. "I just woke up too," she says.

"shouldn't he be in his crib?" I ask. "he's not in there, he checked," she says.

"did Link stop by and pick him up?" I ask as I pour myself a cup of coffee.

"I don't know I was asleep!" she says. "then I don't know, maybe Maggie took him or... something, I don't know," I say.

"so what? I'm not a mom anymore!" she says. "calm down, Amelia. maybe he climbed out of his crib," I say.

"he can do that?" she asks. "he could, he's at that age," I say. "I'll go check in the hallway," she says as she grabs my cup of coffee before leaving the kitchen.

I roll my eyes and grab another mug and pour myself another cup of coffee. "Mommy, can I come to work with you?" Ellis asks.

"No, Ellie. work is busy today and you have to go to school," I say. "but I always go to school," she says.

"you said you wanted to be a surgeon like mommy, right?" I say. she nods. "then you have to go to school everyday until you're twenty-four," I say.

"but I'm only six," she says. "then you have eighteen more years to go," I say. "school is fun, Ellie, you just have to make it fun," Zola says.

"I'm not a nerd like you," Ellis rolls her eyes. "eat your breakfast and then Auntie Amelia can take you to school," I say.

"I can't find him," Amelia says, panicked as she walks into the kitchen again.

"I'm sure he's just hiding somewhere," I say. "but I can't find him!" she says.

"I'll go look for him," I say. she nods as I leave the kitchen.

I go down the hall and walk into Scout's room. I look around room and don't see anything. I leave the room and go into my bedroom to get my purse.

as I'm about to leave the room I see something moving in my under the covers. I walk over to the bed and pull the covers down.

"Hi!" Scout says as he jumps out from the covers. "Hi. you're mommy's looking for you," I say as I lift him into my arms.

"where is mommy?" he asks. "she's in the kitchen," I say walking out of the room.

"I found him," I say walking into the kitchen. I walk over to Amelia and hand him to her.

"where was he?" she asks, kissing all over his face making him giggle.

"he was in my bed under the covers," I say. "Auntie Mer's bed is better than mine," he says.

"Mer, will you take Scout to daycare at the hospital while I take the kids to school?" Amelia says.

"yea, I'll take him. I'm leaving right now," I say. I take Scout from Amelia and take him out to the car.

I help him into the car seat and buckle him in. I go around to the front and get into the drivers seat. I place my bag in the passenger seat.

when I arrive at the hospital I take Scout up to daycare and scrub in for my surgery. after I finish my surgery, I scrub out and as I'm leaving the scrub room I see Nick standing at the door waiting for me.

"what are you doing here?" I ask. "I came to see you," he smiles before kissing me. "how did you even know I was here?" I ask.

"you're always here," he says before my phone starts ringing. "Sorry, I should take this," I say. he nods understandingly as I take my phone from my pocket and start walking down the hallway.

I answer the phone and put it to my ear. "hello?" I say. "is this... Dr. Meredith Grey?" a male's voice says.

"yes, this is she," I say. "I am Doctor. Greg Tomson. we have someone here that we think you would want to see," he says. "what do you mean? who is it?" I ask.

"it's better you come see for yourself. we're at George Washington University Hospital," he says before hanging up.

"Washington?" I say to myself as I hang up. "who was it?" I near Nick's voice behind me, making me jump a bit.

"I... I have to go to Washington," I say. "who's going to Washington?" Amelia asks as she walks up to me.

"I am, I have a thing there," I say. "isn't that where Derek used to work?" she asks. I watch as Nick's face frowns a bit before looking at me for an answer.

"yes, can you get someone to cancel my surgeries, I'd like to go now," I say. "but, how long will you be gone for?" Nick asks.

"I don't know, as long as they need me there," I say. I walk past him and go up to my office before grabbing my things and leaving the hospital.

I go into my car and leave for D.C.
