'the compass dilemma'

MADELYN stood beside eddie, leaning herself against skull rock as she stared down to her shoes. the brunette squatted beside her was telling his side of the story from the night before, explaining everything he saw with patrick, where he had escaped too afterwards, how he managed to steal a walkie in order to contact the group, and how worried he had been for madelyn. the cunningham was partially ignoring his words, rather focusing her mind in on her current condition.

she wondered how she didn't know. how she had not realized that the things she had been seeing and going through weren't from stress.

she felt stupid.

it was obvious to everyone but her. dustin had explained over the radio what was happening to max, and more about what had happened to chrissy. she wondered how she didn't realize. she knew what chrissy had been seeing, she knew what max was going through. madelyn wondered if some part of her had known. if she was simply just pushing that knowledge away to try and save herself the pain of thinking about chrissy. to save herself from thinking about the fact that what happened to chrissy would most likely happen to her.

that she was going to die.

death had always scared madelyn cunningham. even from a young age she didn't understand it. she couldn't comprehend that someone could simply disappear in the span of a minute. that someone was here one second and a lifeless body the next. the cunningham's weren't necessarily a religious family. her mother simply forced them to go to uphold their image within the town. madelyn never believed in heaven or hell, or any kind of afterlife. she wished she did. she wished that she could think chrissy was in a better place, that patrick and fred were too.

but that wasn't who madelyn was.

madelyn was a non-believer. she didn't believe in life after death. life after death seemed about as plausible as being love after marriage. she thought it to be ridiculous to think that her dead family members and friends would be waiting for her at the pearly gates of heaven.

she wished she could. with all her heart she wished she could believe. madelyn wished she could believe that when she died at vecna's hands that chrissy would be waiting for her with a smile. she wished that she would be welcomed into heaven.

she wished she wasn't scared of dying.

she wished she wasn't going to die at 18.

she wished her sister wouldn't have died.

she wished she wouldn't have been dragged into this.
