"How are you holding up? Are you safe? Has anybody tried to contact you? Do you think you have enough security?"
More than the words, you savor the worried tone of your father's voice over the phone.
"I'm okay, father, don't worry. Tell mother that, too," you smile, hearing her questions of if you've taken your medicine and if you've gone to the therapist already. "I've just been home and working remotely for now. How about both of you?"
"We're fine. We've been told that the Ims filed for bankruptcy months ago and have been engaging in fraudulent acts."
"Maybe that's why Han-jae's been trying to get back with me," you voice out. "He needed his hands on our money."
Your father hums in agreement. "You were steadfast in turning Han-jae away. I'm glad you were. His debt to the gang was the last straw, I guess. He seemed like a good man."
"He had this creepy way of cracking his neck. My 'bad people' radar went off like crazy," you say.
"Well, let's hope the investigation will be over soon. We can all go back to something similar to a normal life after," he concludes. "We'll let you know when we're back."
"Okay, take care, you two."
It's odd, talking to your parents like they're actually your parents, and while you know that you can't get any closer or more affectionate than that, you'll take it. Maybe now they'll realize that you're all your family needs.
You smile to yourself, thinking about how the past several days have been. You didn't need to stay as long as you did in the hospital but there was something comforting about knowing that Jungkook was just a couple of doors away.
Namjoon allowed you to go to Jungkook's room once a day, the latter not minding your presence, nodding through your excuse that you just wanted to make sure that the medical staff were doing their job since your family's paying them for premium care.
You made sure that he had everything he needed and that his recovery would be as smooth as possible. He moved to an apartment in an exclusive neighborhood for his safety, and he's on leave with pay until he's medically cleared to return to work.
Thankfully, the bullet didn't completely damage his major organs. He'd been advised to just rest and eat healthily, and you can imagine him losing his shit over not being able to exercise and eat all the cup noodles he wants.
It's why since your discharge, you've been dropping by Jungkook's place everyday for the past week, leaving groceries and home cooked meals on his doorstep. You didn't want to impose but you also knew he wouldn't ask for help, so you decided to not give him a choice.
"Hey," Namjoon calls out. "We're ready to go."
You take the bags of fruits and food and head to the car to secretly drop them off at Jungkook's. It's a little cloudy today and you want to get home before the rain starts to pour.
Mr. Sim parks on the street across from the apartment and like always, you insist on dropping the items by yourself, not wanting to attract attention, although you make sure that Namjoon and Ju-wan, your other bodyguard, are watching closely.
The thunder roars as you near the front door and as you turn around to leave, the door unlocks and you hear a low grumble.
"I should've known it was you," Jungkook says.
You face him and greet him with a shy smile, trying not to be fazed at the sight of him in a loose sleeveless top, his bulging arms gracing your eyes. "Hi, Jeon. I, uh... got you something."
