01: When he starts his first day
##
There's something so intimate about the sound of coffee dripping into a pot, something you're not used to hearing because you never have to prepare it on your own - you either buy it or have someone make it for you.
But you appreciate it now, as you only ever brew coffee yourself when you occasionally spend the night at Jungkook's and get up the next day to have it ready for him by the time he wakes up.
"Hmm, smells good," Jungkook groans, as he walks the few steps from his bedroom to the kitchen where you are.
That's another intimate sound you like hearing - your boyfriend's gravelly voice right after he wakes up, the deep and low tone warming you up as he mumbles "good morning" after he kisses your cheek.
"You're up early," he says, taking the coffee-filled mug from you and biting the egg tart you heated several minutes ago.
"Just excited, I guess," you smile. "It's a big day."
"You seem more excited than I am on my first day at my new job," he cocks his eyebrow.
"It's because I am. You're not out on the field anymore, you're not exposed to danger," you explain.
"Yeah, I'll be on a desk in an office building the whole day. Very exciting," he chuckles.
It's sarcastic, but you know it's a way for him to mask the hint of apprehension that's still there even after the two months since his resignation from the agency and eventual application to your family's subsidiary company.
Upon learning that your father had no choice but to intervene because Jungkook doesn't have a college degree - and wouldn't have qualified even if he's way more experienced than the other applicants - he questioned the decision, as it tested his principles.
He shared his worries with you then, the discomfort of being handed something he feels he doesn't deserve almost making him back out.
You felt for him, knowing that this would eat at his conscience constantly, even if he assured you that he knows what he needs to do so he could continue being with you. You'd said that your father let Jungkook have one foot in the door but he put the other in and entered, having heard that he'd passed the exams and interviews with flying colors.
"You could always—"
"I'm not changing my mind," he interjects. " I'm just a little nervous because I'm not sure if I'll fit in, if I could get people to want to work with me, if I can just be Jungkook 'the office guy' and not Jungkook 'the bodyguard.'"
You take his hand and listen to him, like you did last night as you laid on his chest and answered all his questions.
"I mean, can I even act normally? How do I not scare people away? Can I survive sitting down for hours on end?"
His concerns are valid, as you've told him countless times.
"You'll do well," you say, hoping it comforts him the way it does when he says it to you.
"It may be overwhelming at the start but you'll get the hang of it eventually. You're good at focusing, at analyzing," you encourage him. "But maybe try relaxing your face and smile? You won't be there to intimidate threats or search for one."
He returns your laugh and you reckon that's good enough for now.
"I will try. I just..." He takes a deep breath. "I just don't want to screw this up. This means a lot to us."
"It's gonna be okay," you assure. "And if someone gives you a hard time, I will—"
"Not intervene and instead let me deal with them on my own, yeah?" He chuckles, caressing your face so you'd relax this time.
