UPON ARRIVAL, THEY TOOK NOTE OF THE DEAD SMELL that lingered. Emerson was behind Rick, Carl's hand in hers and her gun in the other. Silas was moving behind her, protecting the back of their group with T-Dog and Daryl.
"Stay with me, alright?" Emerson ordered, giving the boy a small smile and a squeeze of his hand.
"Are we safe here, Emmy?" Carl asked.
Emerson smiled down at him once more, "I sure hope so, babe."
The group of survivors tried to tell themselves that it wasn't over yet. Not even as they approached the front gates were they safe. Not until they were inside the building.
"Keep your guard up," Shane mumbled. "Can't be too careful."
Emerson grabbed a handkerchief from her back-pocket and gave it to Carl. The smell was enough to make all of them faint right then and there.
"Over your nose and mouth." She mumbled, cringing as she wished she had another one.
Almost as if he read her mind, Rick handed her a red bandana. "You do the same." He told her, nodding at the woman. She nodded in thanks and kept moving.
I'm gonna puke, Emerson thought. Or die from this putrid smell.
"Keep it together, come on now." Silas commanded in a low whisper.
When they reached the doors, Shane and Rick banged on the shutters. All that came from it was a rattling sound. It was then Silas who went up in an attempt to use the keypad to open it up, but even that wasn't worth anything. The doors weren't opening.
They continued to bang on the door, but nothing was happening. This was a dead end.
"There's nobody here." T-Dog stated the obvious, which told the rest of them he wanted to leave before Walkers came at them. Though, as the dead came closer and closer, his idea didn't seem so bad.
"Then why are these shutters down?" Rick retorted. When T-Dog didn't have an answer, Rick shook his head and kept trying.
