09 | lost little girl
EMERSON STARED OUTSIDE OF THE YELLOW CHEROKEE. Her mind was everywhere but where it needed to be. She was still thinking back to Jacqui and Dr. Jenner. How they so easily just... Gave up their own lives. If anything, she felt like she needed to keep fighting. She was grateful that Andrea and Dale came running out when they did. She wasn't sure she could bear to lose anyone else.
It had been 48 hours since the H.I.T.'s, as Jenner called it, happened. They spent the night in a camping store, which allowed them to gather more gear. They had left most of everything behind, minus what essentials were left hidden in the mobile home.
For now, they would try to make it to Fort Benning. That seemed to be the only viable option left.
As they traveled, Emerson still found herself riding in the same vehicle as the Grimes/Peletier family. They had chosen to leave Daryl's truck and Shane's Jeep behind. She refused to ride in the same vehicle as Shane so that really only left her with that option. It didn't help the awkwardness between her and Rick that Silas ditched her to sit with Nathan in the RV.
They hadn't talked of that night and Emerson hoped they never would. Shaking her from the thoughts that lingered in her mind, came Carl's voice.
"Right, Emmy? You'll come with us?" Carl asked. He was asking about the beach. How he hoped one day, once this was all over, they'd made their way there.
"Of course. I'd never leave you guys." She said with a wide grin as she glanced back.
Rick looked over to Emerson. He noticed how distracted she had become. He could easily figure out what was going on. Their friends, her friends that she'd been with since the beginning, were gone. Turned to nothing but ash or dirt. Still, he felt obligated to make sure she was alright. He considered her a friend. Or perhaps more than that sometimes...
"You okay?" Rick said, his voice in a low mutter.
Emerson looked over at the man driving. She forced a smile and replied, "Just fine, Lucky."
Rick scrunched his eyebrows together as he wiped his hand across his face. Though he knew what could truly be wrong, he couldn't shake the feeling that something else was bothering her. The way she flinched anytime he would come near her or the way she stayed to herself over the last 48 hours.
