the boys of summer - don henley

In the early hours of the next morning, Mickey, Steve, and Robin still sat atop the secret room which they'd only recently learned was really an elevator. Though Dustin's idea of climbing out of the shaft didn't turn out, the realization did create a secondary space outside of the confining area below.

After coaxing Erica and Dustin to go to sleep, the older teens took it upon themselves to stay up trying to figure out a way out of there. And, as the top of the elevator was away from the younger kids, it was the only space Mickey felt, morally, that she could smoke. And with her current nerve levels, she really needed a smoke.

"This is hopeless," Mickey said from her place laid down atop the elevator. "We have to get them out of here."

"Agreed," Steve murmured. He looked between the other two girls as Mickey passed Robin her cigarette. Robin was vehemently not a smoker, but she was that day. "Hey, listen. Let's swear, right now, if it comes down to it... we get them out. No matter what."

Robin's expression sobered, but she nodded. "Deal."

"Ditto," Mickey muttered. "That means put them first. Always."

Steve reached over and plucked the cigarette from Robin's grasp. "Exactly."

...

Mickey barely got any sleep that night. The symptoms of being stuck in an uncomfortable elevator for eight hours were hitting her like a ten-ton truck. She was exhausted, starving, and her head was pounding. Especially after waking to Dustin's incessant echoing call from the top of the elevator.

"This is a code red. I repeat, a code red. Does anybody copy? We are innocent children and we are trapped under Starcourt Mall. The Red Army has infiltrated Hawkins and if we are found, they will torture and kill us."

"Good morning to you, too, sunshine," Mickey groaned as she climbed up on top of the elevator. "Will you give it a rest? You're gonna drain the battery."

"The mall just opened," Dustin said.

"Okay?"

"Someone could be in range."

Mickey scoffed. "Yeah, that's gonna happen. All you're gonna accomplish is driving me crazy," she said, running both hands through her hair.

Dustin sighed and came to sit down beside her. She leaned her head down on his shoulder, closing her eyes, if only for a moment of rest. "I don't get why you're such a cranky pants after getting to spend the night with Steve."

Mickey opened one eye to peek up at the younger boy. "Well, we've already-"

"Gross!" Dustin interrupted, pushing Mickey off of him as she laughed. "Already? You've been back for, like, two days."
