Just like Jonathan had told Melissa, he went to the Wheeler's after school.
Knock. Knock. Knock. Karen heard a sound from the front door and ran to see who it could be. She opened the door with surprise. "Oh, Jonathan! How have you been? I'm sure Nancy will be thrilled to see you! We've missed having you around here." A smile lit up the boy's face. "Thank you, Mrs. Wheeler. I've been okay. Just... living life, I guess. Nothing special. Could I talk to Nancy?" The woman nodded. "Of course, dear! You can find her right upstairs in her room. I would knock though. That girl has been so feisty lately." Mrs. Wheeler let the boy through the door and watched with a friendly smile as he walked up the stairs to her daughter.
Oh, she thought, I'm so glad they're back together. No more Steve Harrington nonsense.
When Jonathan reached Nancy's door, he wasn't sure what to say. He almost just went in, but he wasn't sure how she would take it. She had just gone through a break up again. In his heart, Jonathan truly believed Nancy missed him. They were meant to be. Knock. Knock. Knock. "Come in," Nancy said from the other side. Oh god. He thought. Please don't be angry. Please be over Steve. Please be over him.
As soon as Nancy saw Jonathan walk through her door, she became defensive. "What are you doing here?" She demanded. A wave of worry spread throughout his entire body. "I came to see you... I heard about what happened." Nancy rolled her eyes sarcastically. "You don't know anything, Jonathan. You should go." He took a step towards the girl. "Nancy, I'm here now. I don't want to go. I want to be with you." Jonathan took her hands but she pulled away. "No. We aren't even friends anymore, Jonathan. You should leave. Go spend time with Melissa. I'm sure she misses you." She said innocently. He shook his head. "No. We broke up. I want you." Nancy's face had pure disgust written all over it. "No." She said walking over to the door, motioning for him to leave. "You should go." Jonathan shook his head once more. "Your mom even said you miss me, Nancy. Why can't you just accept that? Why can't you just accept your feelings for me? You know that you love me. I love you too. We're meant to be. We are. And I'm sorry that Steve broke up with you. You don't deserve that, love. You don't."
Nancy's patience was slowly beginning to fade away. "We didn't break up, Jonathan. The person who you're getting information from is a liar. And so is my mom. She only likes you because you're not Steve. But I love Steve. Romantically. Now get out of my room before I freaking force you out." Jonathan's jaw fell open in shock. Nancy and Steve had broken up, and he was sure of it. Nancy just didn't want him to think that. He couldn't do anything else. He couldn't even think. He could only think of one thing to do: kiss her.
Jonathan's plan backfired. As soon as he got anywhere close to her lips she pushed him to the floor and started cursing him out. "What the fuck? WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?! I HAVE A BOYFRIEND JONATHAN. FUCKING GET OUT!" He scooted back towards the foot of her bed out of fear. "Nancy! Stop it! Nancy!" Jonathan shouted back at her. Nancy's rage soared through her veins. She pointed to the door. "OUT! NOW!" He scrambled to his feet, ran out of the house, and to his car. What had he done? Did Nancy really not want to kiss him?
Nancy slammed her door shut, so angry she could hardly think. She'd lied to Jonathan but she didn't have any other option. There was no chance in hell she was ever getting back with him. Ever. She wanted to spend the rest of her life with Steve, even if they couldn't be together right now. Right person wrong time.
After thinking for a bit, she went down to the kitchen to confront her mother. "Why would you tell Jonathan that I like him? I never want to see him again! I hate him!" Karen looked on her daughter with no sympathy. "Nancy Wheeler, you do not talk about people that way! Jonathan is a lovely boy and anyone would be a fool not to date him. You only seem to be interested in the boys whom want to do bad things to little, innocent girls." Nancy couldn't believe what she was hearing. "What the hell?! You're taking Jonathan's side over mine! Really? He tried to kiss me, mom! And he is a horrible person!" Mrs. Wheeler shook her head. "Give him a break, Nancy. No one is perfect." The girl lowered her eyes at her mother. "You are a hypocrite. You can't just say 'no one is perfect' and 'give him a break' and then go treat Steve like shit." Karen sighed. "You don't understand, Nancy. Boys like Steve Harrington want nothing more than to use you as a little toy and then throw you away." Nancy shook her head, walking away from the argument. She couldn't listen to her mother's lies and ridicules any longer. Even though they weren't technically "together" anymore, she went to go find Steve.
. . . . . . . .
Just as Jonathan had gone to Nancy, Melissa had gone to Steve. She knew exactly what she wanted.
Steve was working at Family Video, per usual, and Melissa's restraint order had just ended. She proudly walked into the store, head held high. As soon as she spotted Steve's face, her face saddened for him. But inside, she was more glee-full than ever.
Melissa swung the door open, ringing the bell. "Oh Steve! I heard about what happened! I'm so horribly sorry that Wheeler bitch broke up with you. She really is a dreadful little thing, isn't she?" Steve didn't want to hear the girl's stupid comments. He shouted for Keith in the back. Melissa took his hand, quieting her voice. "No, Steve! Please. I know what it's like... it's happened to me before. We can go out after graduation on Sunday and talk about it. Just us. A date." He pulled his hand away immediately. "Go away, Melissa. If you say one more bad thing about Nancy I'm going to wreck your car." She frowned. "Oh honey, don't be hung up over that girl. I know breakups are hard, but-" "We didn't break up, Melissa. I'd be going if I were you." Another frown. "Oh, but Stevie, I can't. I love you too much. I've waited so long for you. I know you're single now. But you don't have to be. Meve forever, darling. Melissa and Steve. Or Stelissa if you like. Steve and Melissa."
Just as she finished her flirty sentence, Keith walked in. "Melissa Campbell. What movie are you here to buy?" The girl stepped back, afraid of another restraint order. "Back to the future. It's very funny! The other cheerleaders love it, Keith! Would you like that? A date with one?!" Steve cringed. "You're watching a movie where a kid tries to bang his mom?" Melissa rolled her eyes flirtatiously. "Oh, Stevie, don't be so serious. It's only a movie! It's supposed to be fantasy." Keith eyed the two. "So, you've come to date Harrington since Nancy Wheeler is out of the picture, huh? Too bad, Melissa Campbell. We do not accept Nancy slander in this store. Goodbye." The girl frowned. "That's not company policy, Keith! You'll never get a date with any cheerleaders as long as you try to keep me away from Stevie!" A chuckle came from the manager's mouth. "I have Nancy now, Melissa. I don't need any smelly cheerleaders." The girl raised an eyebrow. "You're dating Nancy Wheeler?! And I thought this day couldn't get any better!" Keith smiled a toothy smile. "Hell yeah I am, babyyy. She LOVES me. More than Harrington I say." Steve cringed once again. "Don't lie to customers, Keith. It's embarrassing."
As the three continued to argue, another car pulled up to the store. A car Steve knew very well. As the most beautiful girl walked into the store, his face lit up. "Nance! You're here!" He said, walking over to embrace her. She hugged him back tightly, not wanting to let go. "What's going on?" She whispered in his ear. "Melissa is trying to hit on me. Keith is telling her you're dating him now." He whispered back. Nancy's anger became fiercer. "That little bitch," she hissed.
As they pulled away from the embrace, Steve led her into the main part of the store, and held her closer than usual. Nancy went along with it because she wanted people to know they weren't broken up- even though they were taking a break. Keith frowned. "Nancy, don't cheat on me. I love you." He said blatantly. She winced. "I'm sorry, Keith, but I don't reciprocate those feelings for you." A little laugh almost escaped Steve's lips as Melissa glared at the two.
Keith finally got Melissa to leave and went into the back after having his heart crushed by his crush.
Then it was just Steve and Nancy.
He kissed her forehead. "Guess we really can't stay away from each other, huh?" A little laugh escaped her lips. "Yeah, but we still can't be together. Not right now," she said dismally. He frowned. "I know. I wish we could be. It's killing me, Nance. It's killing me."
She leaned against his shoulder. "Me too. And it's bringing uninvited company around."
Steve frowned. "What do you mean?"
"Melissa came to you here after Jonathan came to my fucking house." He held her tighter "Why? He's literally your ex."
Nancy sighed. "He wanted to get back together. I kept telling him to leave. Then he tried to kiss me." Steve pulled away as quick as the knot of anger had settled in his stomach. "What?!" She looked towards the door angrily. "They did it on purpose. They wanted to break us up. He tried to kiss me after I told him to go home. So I cussed him out. Never thought I could hate Jonathan more, but I was wrong. I hate him."
Steve nodded. "I'm sorry about that, Nance. He seems horrible."
She kissed him and they stood in silence as they spent the last time publicly as a couple for the next two weeks.
