-Home?-

"Thomas! Thomas! Wake up! We gotta go! Come one!" I yell at the sleeping boy over the loud sound of the helicopter. Once he was awake, I let the men guide me where we needed to go. A terrifying screech sounded "Cranks! We got Cranks!" I heard someone yell out before gun fire. The sound of shots being fired raised my adrenaline even higher. "Come on! Move it, move it!" I ushered (y/n) and Aziel in front of me.

Orders were being called out left and right as we approached some kind of building. As we were moving to the building's door, men with guns were coming out. We made it into the building and the door closed just as Thomas entered, locking out the others. I could feel Aziel snake his hand into mine, I gave it a small squeeze to reassure him. I turned to (y/n) to check up on her but she was just like everyone else, gawking at the interior. We were in some kind of loading bay. People, trucks, crates were all running around.

We were put into some room, they gave us food and water but just told us to stay put and wait. Eventually, a guard opened the door. We all immediately stood at attention at the squeaking sound of the door opening. Someone else addressed us however, "You kids doing all right?" He gave us a smirk. He wore a white turtleneck with a black jacket, definitely older than us judging by the white hair on the sides of his head. "Sorry about all the fuss. We had ourselves a bit of a swarm. " The man apologised.

"Who are you?" Thomas asks as the group gathered round. "I'm the reason you're still alive. It's my intention to keep you that way. Now, come with me. We'll get you kids squared away. " Without a proper answer, the man just left. Having no one else to rally trust, we followed the man.

"You can call me Mr. Janson. I run this place." This Mr. Janson, i guess, Introduced himself as he led us through the building. "For us it is a sanctuary, safe from the horrors of the outside world. You all should think of it as a waystation. Kind of a home between homes. Watch yourself." He further explained the buildings, warning us of flying sparks as we walked underneath some people.

"That means you're taking us home?" Thomas asked the important question, Janson turned to him. "A home of sorts." He vaguely replied to Thomas before facing front again. "Sadly, there wouldn't be much left of wherever you came from. But we do have a place for you. A refuge, outside of the Scorch, where WICKED will never find you again. How does that sound?" Mr. Janson compromised but even so. I don't trust him at all.

I could feel a small, delicate hand, grasp mine. Turning, I see (y/n) but she was staring lasers at the back of Janson's head. "I don't like him." I could barely hear her mutter under her breath. "You're not the only one but we have no choice but to trust him for now." I gave her hand a squeeze. "If he tries anything to Aziel we can beat him up no problem. Okay?" (y/n)'s face cracked a smile at my joke. "Okay." she gave me a thankful nod before focusing back on the group, hand intertwined in mine.

"Why are you helping us?" I finally decided to ask the questions. "Let's just say the world out there is in a rather precarious situation. We're all hanging on by a very thin thread. The fact that you kids can survive the Flare virus, makes you the best chance of humanity's continued survival. Unfortunately, it also makes you a target, as no doubt by now you've noticed. " He answered as he led us in front of a large door. The small window on it allowed us to see that beyond that door is someplace completely different from here.

"Beyond this door lies the new beginning of your new lives." He swiped some sort of card as it beeped and opened the door, revealing a long white hallway. Beside me, I could hear (y/n)'s breath hitch as her grip on my hand tightened. "You okay?" I gently shook her hand. Her eyes were wide and even if she tried to hide it, I could still see the tiny lace of fear in them.
