The warm breeze blew my loose hair around my shoulders, and I shoved it behind my ears again in aggravation. Despite the horrible start, it had been a great day, but it was going downhill fast.

The after-school program had closed an hour ago, and still, I sat on a bench outside, watching Zeke and Benji play on the playground. Calder's mate had still not shown up to pick up her son. I wasn't sure what to do. I didn't want to keep waiting, but I didn't want to leave just for her to show up and find us gone, either.

I wondered if an emergency had come up or if there'd been an accident or something. I'd tried calling Linc and Becca, but neither had picked up, probably still in their meeting. Linc hadn't given me any other pack member's numbers since I'd arrived. There'd been no reason to.

In a moment of desperation, I texted my Gamma. "I need your brother's number."

A few minutes later, a text came through with the phone number I needed, quickly followed by another admonishing me for texting him. I knew I shouldn't have., but I didn't see any other option. I texted Josh, asking for Haven's number.

Once he responded, I called the number but got no answer. Nibbling my lower lip nervously, I shoved my phone into my pocket and called for the boys. I was done waiting. It was nearing dinner time, and I knew the boys were getting hungry despite their lack of complaint.

Getting them both in the backseat and buckled up didn't take long. They were eager to go home.

"She forgot, didn't she?" Benji asked softly, causing my eyes to jerk to the rearview mirror, where I found his bright green gaze.

What the hell am I supposed to say to that? Is that really what happened? And has it happened before?

My wolf nudged at my mind, urging me to lie. I didn't like to be dishonest, but if I was ever going to lie through my teeth, this seemed like the moment to do it.

"Why would you think that?"

"Because she didn't show up." His eyes dropped from the mirror to his lap.
