The sun's rays warmed the bare skin of my face and arms, eliciting a sense of comfort I hadn't experienced in a week. That's how long it took me to venture out of the seclusion the cabin provided after beginning the bond-breaking process. I was finally back at the packhouse.
It took Isadora four days to complete breaking the bonds with the members of my pack, but it took another three for me to drag myself out of bed. The grief had been overwhelming for both my wolf and me. The severity of it had me wavering in my decision, haunted by memories and dreams about happier times.
I slammed the car door and swiftly walked around the side of the packhouse to the backyard, following the sound of children's laughter.
When I rounded the corner, Zeke, Benji, Calder, and Alpha Linc were playing an enthusiastic game of tag in the grass, while Becca and Ella watched from their seats on the back patio. Both girls offered welcoming smiles as I made my way toward them.
I hadn't seen the others in a week, but Becca had appeared at the cabin to check on me daily. The two of us had grown closer while she witnessed my fight with the depression of my own making.
"How are you feeling today?" Becca asked as I took a seat in the chair beside her. "Must be better if you came back."
"I wouldn't say better. More like I needed to get out. Find a distraction."
Both girls nodded in understanding.
"You need to get laid," Ella said with a smirk, catching Becca and me by surprise. We both shot her disbelieving looks. "What? It would be one hell of a distraction."
I shook my head with a chuckle.
"Besides, it's not like she's waiting for her mate," she continued, causing me to wince slightly.
Becca smacked her arm. "Ignore her. Sensitivity has never been her strong suit."
"It's fine," I mumbled. I knew she meant nothing by it.
"See? She doesn't mind. I was just trying to help," Ella insisted. "We all know that old saying. The best way-...."
"To get over a man is to get under another," the three of us recited together with a laugh.
