tyler was standing next to his mom in his brand new suit. his hands were shaking. his mind was going blank. he could feel it.

"he's gonna win," tyler muttered, but just loud enough that his mom heard him.

"he won't win. we will win tyler," his mom took his hand, and smiled.

-

the court session was long and lengthy. they had been there since ten in the morning and the clock was now shining three. tyler and his sister were tired and wanted to go home, but tyler was on his toes. he was most likely going to be called on soon. and so he was.

"do you swear to speak the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?"

"I do."

"tyler joseph, do you think your father is a fit father?"

"no."

"why is that?"

"he abused me, my sister and our mom, for as long as i can remember, from about the age of six."

"do you have proof of these abuses?"

"yes, my mom showed pictures to the court prior to meeting here."

pictures of all tyler's bruises, his black eyes, all were shown upon the screen. the group gasped. tyler felt his stature straighten.

"when is the most recent photo from?"

another wave of gasps.

"that was my mom's final straw before she divorced my father, and now is fighting for full custody over me and my little sister, maddie."

"OBJECTION!"

tyler could hear the snarl in his voice. he was losing. tyler's father knew it.

"THIS LITTLE BASTARD IS RUINING MY CHANCES!"

the group gasped as the judge banged his gravel.

"I NEVER TOUCHED A HAIR ON THAT BOY'S HEAD! THIS IS A SETUP."

"order! order!" the judge yelled.

"I LOVE HIM!"

tyler stood, his blood boiling. all the suffering he had gone through. for his father to say those words.

"ALL THAT I DID TO TRY TO UNDO IT. ALL OF MY PAIN AND ALL YOUR EXCUSES. I WAS A KID BUT I WASN'T CLUELESS. SOMEONE WHO LOVES YOU WOULDN'T DO THIS. ALL OF MY PAST I TRIED TO ERASE. BUT NOW I SEE WOULD I EVEN CHANGE IT. MIGHT SHARE A FACE AND SHARE A LAST NAME BUT WE ARE NOT THE SAME."

"ORDER!"

the court went silence.

"we will.. take a short recess."

-

tyler sat in silence. he crossed the line. he knew it. he was losing for sure. he was never going to escape the cycle. he was going to die. at his own fathers hands.

'what a horrible way to die,' he thought.
