"What in the world is going on?"
The brunette stared at the blonde, and the blonde stared back, his ebon eyes wide. They had just talked without opening their mouth. This definitely wasn't normal, for either races. Sure, they had their differences, but telepathy? Unheard of. Of course, if they'd know about soulmates and the effects, (which Grian has never bothered to learn, and scar didn't pay attention) they would've know it was an effect of a soulbound. But, of course, both were clueless and would remain that way.
They sat like that for a while, staring eachother down as their brains processed what seemed an impossible feat. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, Grian, still slightly shocked, shook out his feathers and stood with a grunt.
"Well, no point in just sitting here gaping at one another, hmm? It's definitely weird, but so is the fact that our countries are fighting and we're sitting in a treehouse chatting and being friends. I say we circle back to this, and go focus on more important things for now. I mean, what else can we do?" The littler finished, tilting his head to look at his friend in the eye. Scar shrugged. "That's probably the smarter thing to do," he answered evenly, taking Grian's hand before going back the way they came. It was so natural for them at this point, it was like a reflex. Neither of them noticed until they stepped out and looked down. They both laughed nervously, Scar suddenly very interested in the painting and Grian turning as red as his sweater. Even though they shared a kiss, as homies do, they still considered themselves "just friends." Yeah, they weren't the brightest stars.
The sun was just setting as they walked out of their shared room, going toward the living room where everyone was hanging around idly. Suddenly, Scar had an idea.
"Hey, guys! Who's up for a game of monopoly?" He asked, looking around as people nodded or said okay. He smiled and clapped his hands, running to the bookcase and grabbing the board game that was on top before returning to the living room.
"So obviously, there's too many people so we'll just do teams of two! Everyone can go with their roommate!" the elf exclaimed gleefully, grabbing Grian's arm and dragging him to a spot on the floor in front of the board. He claimed the cat for him and the Avian's team, placing it on "go" before turning toward Grian.
Grian claimed banker and started sorting everyone's money, handing it out as Bdubs placed the cards on the board. Mumbo placed his and his teammates piece on the start, twirling his mustache. "I'm totally gonna win, cus I look just like the monopoly guy," he announced, chuckling to himself. Cleo rolled her eyes and started discussing strategies with Pearl, who was nodding along while she scanned the board. Once everyone was settled, they started their game.
"Since I suggested playing, me and Grian get to go first," Scar sang, rolling the dice. "We'll go counter-clockwise. So that means Cleo and Pearl are after us, then Mumbo and X, Tango and Impulse, and finally Etho and Bdubs. Everyone got it?" he finished, glancing around to make sure everyone understood. "Good. Let's start!"
Grian turned out to be a really good monopoly player. He and Scar already had a few thousand dollars, and it had only been 6 turns. Everyone was baffled that the shorty had pulled off such strategic plays, especially since it was a game of chance. Bdubs and Etho were already bankrupt, and we're watching the rest of the players while they sat on the couch. Tango and Impulse were close behind them, only 3 properties to their name and about 700$. Meanwhile, Mumbo and X were taking it at a moderate pace while Scar's and Cleo's teams were neck and neck. The game was pretty intense for it being made for children.
Tango cursed as he got out in jail, Pearl sticking out her tongue at their team. Mumbo and Xisuma had gotten bored and left, splitting their properties evenly among the three remaining groups. Impulse put on some catchy music and everyone sang along, laughing the whole way through. It would've been such a nice way to end the day, but nothing ever lasts forever.
Right as it had turned Grian's turn, someone banged on the door. Everyone searched around, confused. Xisuma stood up and walked toward the door, saying it was probably just the wind. Just then, someone knocked even louder, with urgency. Now the bird hybrid was worried. What was so important that someone would bang on the door this late at night?
X opened it, the mystery visitor blocked by his frame as they exchanged a few words. The person was too far for the group to hear what they were saying, and everyone was craning their heads for a closer look. All of the residents were quiet now, straining to hear the hushed tones X and the stranger were exchanging. Finally, Xisuma came back, grim faced.
"It's for you, Grian," he stated, tilting his head toward the door as he sat back down. Heart pounding, the blonde stood up. It was nothing to worry about, he told himself. It was probably just Aves coming to check in on him. Then why did X look so worried? He shook his head, walking toward the door. It turns out, he was half right.
At the door was Aves, but she looked bedraggled and dirty. Her eyes shone with urgency and fear as she looked up at him. Behind her were a few others, looking just as distressed as her. She looked down slightly at him. "They got us, Grian. Bombed the whole town. We're- we're all that's left," She choked out, standing to the side to reveal a very small group, maybe 10 or 20. The boy, horrified, looked up and met Aves eyes.
"It's fight or flight now, Grian. And they've chosen fight."wrote this in one sitting
