Light Yagami watched the cranes move from the eighth floor of the Kira Investigation Headquarters. The place was unmistakably dormant, its once beating hearts stopped long ago.
Now only he remained. The building would ironically serve as his place of justice for now...but a new one will soon be erected.
"And then it'll be official..." Yagami's fingers brush the tip of the glass, staring at his own reflection as well as the world below.
He began to laugh.
"Hey, look, I don't mean to bother you, but you can't tell me where you keep the apples in this place, huh?"
Light stopped short in his growing laugher to face the Shinigami, Ryuk. Shaking his head, he answered indifferent, as if somehow higher than the god of death who had given him this life.
"I'm sure you can find apples around here somewhere, Ryuk, open your eyes." He sighs, pointing down below, "The kitchen is just below us. I'm sure the cabinets have apples waiting for you." He turns back to the window.
"Hmph, you'd think since you rule the world, you'd get some pretty good apples by now, but..." Ryuk mumbled lowly, before disappearing into the ground below.
Light was left to his own silence. Despite his standing, Light still felt...human enough to miss a quaint life.
Studying and walking home from school...the bells that rang above him, and occasionally a friend calling his name, asking to come to the arcade, or to the library to study...
Love, romance, the smallest things in life that were never ruined by the world's rotten state.
People called him Light Yagami then, called him great.
But now they would call him Kira...call him god."You do realize what Kira means, don't you?"
A voice made Light snap his head around to the three seats in front of the various, shut down, computer monitors. To his horror, a figure sat in the center chair, where he always sat before.
L.
"Because it does not mean god, and simply because the slang term is in referral to a god of some sorts..." L mused with a small spoon, but frowned at an empty coffee cup before him, "It's definition will always be 'Killer."
"What are you doing here?!" Light had no time to contain himself before he yelled, taking steps toward the chair in rage, "You're dead!" He placed a hand on the back of the chair, affecting L's balance but for a moment.
"I might be dead, but you just couldn't stand to watch me die, could you?" L turned his face to reveal a grotesque bullet wound in the side of his head, not bleeding, but a dark red all the same as it could have been, "You are no god, Kira, you are just a human. If you had been a god, than no taking of human life would amount anything to you." L narrowed his eyes, his voice growing sharper, "Even your supposed friends! A monster pretending to be a human wouldn't care that his attackers die..." His hands grip the chair, as a grim smile emerges on his face,
"But the fact that you are human...it horrifies you, doesn't it?""Shut up!" Light screamed maniacally as he placed both his hands on the chair, slugging it to his left. The chair fell, but the vision of L was gone.
It was a hallucination.
Light breathes heavily, his fists clenched as hard as they were when he had his back turned to L with a gun. To an L about to commit suicide.
"Don't worry Light...it always scared me too...to be human."*Lucian's POV*
I was blindfolded before they even opened the door of my room. However, I knew Wammy's House better than any place I have ever been in my entire life.
But, yet again, I haven't visited many places.
Once my eyes were closed, cloth folded around them, I was led with a hand on my back and a gun to the back of my head. As we walked forward, I imagined the parallel lines on either side of me, leading down a hallway, long and strait. We would soon reach an elevator, exactly one story in length.
I quite literally did live under a rock, as Light Yagami said.
"Light Yagami..." My mind wandered as his name bounced in and out of my head. L always had the advantage of being up at all hours of the night and day with his insomnia to think about his possibility of being Kira, but that could be a blessing as well as a curse. How could one focus without resting his mind, even a little?
The opposite is just a curse to me. I can't concentrate in silence for long, or else I will fall asleep. It's a guarantee. I must keep moving...pacing, most likely drawing mazes of Wammy's House or abroad. Sometimes I would just draw them for fun's sake...*Half A Year Earlier*
"This is..." Lawliet stared and the wall sized maze in front of him, a piece of chalk pinched between his forefinger and thumb, "...taking much longer than I expected." He pressed the chalk to his line he was making, moving the etch down and left, before crouching down and studying my maze again.
"I felt drowse free for about an hour last night." I say, placing my hands into my tan pockets, "I decided to make it more difficult so that maybe Near could try it one day." I shift slightly, "Whenever we decide to tell him about me, anyway..."
Lawliet rose from his crouch on the floor and moved his line again, down the path that I knew was correct so far, before musing with a slight sigh, "Near might be able to solve this more quickly than I...he'd have great fun solving your puzzles." He moved the line to a crossroad in the board, before narrowing his eyes as they skirted along the wall, "I...am not sure where to move at this point." He stands up fully, his eyes still restlessly tiring over the image, "One hour, you said?" He turned to me.
But I was leaning on the wall behind me, my eyes bleary and turning lazily down.
I saw Lawliet purse his lips, before his eyes widened as he turned to the maze again. In five more strokes, he found his line out, etching an X at the end of his path.
I struggled to keep my eyes open as I slid to the floor.
"One hour of wakefulness...I will forever wonder how much you could change with a day."
L's voice faded, and I was in my dreams again.*Present Day*
"Wake up."
I blinked my eyes open with a sharp inhale, the memory of my current situation rushing back to me. I went to stand...
But I couldn't.
It was dark all around me. I reached my hands up, and felt a small ceiling above me. Next to me, touching my sides, small walls. I pressed against them. Firm. Dark.
I was in a box.
A small slit opened directly in front of my face. I was met by the eyes of Light Yagami.
"Mind telling me your name?" He said with a smirk, and I narrow my eyes, glaring harshly.
"Right. So you know..." He says lowly, "Well, until we learn your name, I suppose I can call you L-Minor. You even got his crouch...just perfect."
I winced. I couldn't move from this balled up position, which was really just like how L sat. I could barely even move my arms, let alone my legs or torso. It was already starting to hurt...
"Don't be so sad...if you tell us your name, you won't have to sit here and remember Lawliet in regret for much longer." Light sneers.
"I will not..." I say, my voice cracking. It is slightly higher than Lawliet's, but it is still hoarse from...not being used.
"If you don't want to, that's fine." I see him stand, "But just remember...when the darkness finally drives you crazy, or you get so thirsty you can't even think, try to at least remember your name." The slit closes, and I flinch.
"It's all you are going to be good for by then anyway."
