A Few Moments Before
Levi's POV:
After I saw the footprints left by the Titans, my heart began to race because I realized that I had moved in a big circle, unaware of them walking past me. The thunderstorm had covered the sound of their footsteps, along with the fog blocking the massacred bodies on the ground beside the impressions in the mud, making a clear path of where they were heading, which was where I came from, away from Furlan and Isabel. The booming thunder shook me to my core, lining up with my heartbeat before I tightly pulled on Shadow's reins to follow the Titan's footprints, "Shit! Shit! Shit!" I cursed out into the thunderous background, "Hurry, Shadow!" I order as I rush back, hoping to prevent the oncoming onslaught while trying to listen for Isabel's and Furlan's voices, but the pouring rain makes it impossible. My hood falls due to Shadow's speed against the wind, but I don't care to fix it because I need to hurry before it's too late. As I continue following the footprints, I remember there is more than one Titan, 'They'll be overwhelmed by the numbers. I need to hurry!' I thought before I saw a horse coming out of the fog, and I recognized it as belonging to Sairam, which meant I was getting closer to the squad, "Almost there, Shadow!" I whisper aloud.
Once the rain slows down, I see five titan figures in the distance before listening to Flagon screaming Sairam's name as a Titan devours him. Somehow, even at a distance, I can hear the crunching noise, which echoes in my ears while my heart races along with Shadow's speed. Hoping it's not too late for Furlan and Isabel, I look for them, but the damn fog is blocking my sight, so I have no choice but to scream their names, praying they can hear it, "FURLAN! ISABEL!" I yell from afar, but they don't respond to my shout as the rain begins pouring again while I try to hurry back, "Goddammit, this is not what we need right now!" I curse at the dark-gray sky before hearing a Titan roaring, causing me to see it lunging for Furlan, making my heart stop because I'm about to witness one of my best friend's death, and I can't get there fast enough. Somehow, Furlan manages to dodge the lunging giant, but he pays for it by his horse landing on one of his legs. However, when the same Titan goes to try it again, Furlan is stuck as he tries to move out from under his horse's body. I shake my head while flapping the Shadow's reins, urging him to go faster, "HURRY! SHADOW!" I yell over the pouring rain, but I don't realize that the more I push Shadow, the more I don't notice the slippery mud on the ground until Shadow's hooves slip, which causes him to buck me off his back. Luckily, I manage to slide through the muddy foundation as I cover my face from the splashing of the dirt flying.
After I stop sliding, I look at where the three figures are in the distance, only to see another Titan trying to reach for Furlan, causing me to ignore the mud on my clothes as I run toward the battle, "FURLAN!" I shout while running to my squad, only to find out that Furlan still hasn't been able to move to dodge the giant hand reaching for him. While running down another hill, I watched someone fly above where I saw Furlan fall, recognizing the screams belonging to Isabel as she had cut off four of its fingers before dashing away, "I will fill in for Levi for the time being!" She yells before swinging around the Titan to slice the nape. However, she misses and cuts its shoulder instead, causing her to grapple onto its back when realizing her mistake. I keep running, even when I see Isabel's foot slip, causing her to hit her head against the hard surface, which leaves her dizzy and only makes me keep running, especially when I spot another Titan staring at her, hanging from her grapples. The thunderous vibrations from the Titan charging toward her don't prevent her earthshattering scream, "LE--VI-" Isabel screams before the running titan smashes into where she had been, causing me to stop because I had failed to protect her. Though I couldn't accept that Isabel was gone, I knew I didn't have time to mourn because Furlan and Flagon still needed saving. I take a deep breath while grabbing my handgrips to connect two blades into the sockets before yelling an agonizing scream as I prepare to use my ODM gear.
