The brisk September breeze chilled me, along with my younger siblings, Regan and Carter. I sat on the handrail of our patio, watching the moon rise and the sun fall. It was mesmerizing, really. The teal color of the moon gave a mysterious atmosphere. I was snapped out of my trance as I heard a series of small footsteps behind me, ones that were made from socks creeping across the deck. I turned, seeing my little sister behind me, an inquisitive expression on her face. Regan asked,

"Kali? Is the Loch Ness Monster real?"

I was surprised by this, but comforted the seven year old by saying,

"No, why?"

She shuffled uncomfortably, and continued,

"Well, Carter said it was rea—"

She was cut off by an eerie roar in the distance, across the lake. My gaze snapped towards the noise, the flush trees highlighted by the increasing amount of moonlight. The water rippled, showing movement beneath the surface. Carter rushed down the stairs with his paper, nearly tripping over the last step. I shouted,

"Carter! What are you doing?"

I was probably just as nervous as Regan, who gripped onto my thigh out of fear. Carter yelled back to me,

"Look at the moon! It's Nessie Night!"

The moon, which was now dominating most of the sky with a deep, comfortable darkness, was still just as teal as last time. My heart pounding in my chest, I demanded,

"Get back here! The Loch Ness monster isn't real! It could've been a bear's roar for all we know; or maybe a mountain lion!"

Carter continued walking forward, needing to scream back to me,

"Oh, please. I did my research, the moon turns teal when the Nessie comes out,"

He held his coloring paper in his hand, and flipped it around to show me.

"And it's gonna' look so cool!"

His picture showed a teal moon over a pond, with a green monster with a long neck protruding from it. It could've been a kindergartner's drawing, but it still got the point across. He turned back towards the lake, which was only illuminated by the moonlight.

I blinked, and a lump appeared in the water. I squinted, trying to focus on the object. It then shot out from the water and let out a bellowing cry, revealing its giant torso. Carter gasped in awe, and Regan's grip on my leg tightened. The creature's eyes glowed a bright aqua, adding color to its silhouette dancing in the moonlight.

It stayed on the surface, gracefully swimming across the lake. I took out my phone and quickly snapped a burst of pictures. I was breath-taken, but fighting my own silence, I managed to breathe out the words,

"Regan, get mom and dad."

Regan nodded, heading inside and slamming the door behind her. I shouted to Carter, who stood there, staring at the creature,

"Carter! Get inside!"

He retorted,

"Okay, fine-"

The young boy slowly turned around and trudged towards the house. I still stood there, bewildered and shook. As Carter walked up the steps and crept towards the door, I swiftly followed, opening up the gallery on my phone as I stepped into the house.

When I went to close the door however, I looked back outside at the lake. Just as it was the night before, it was a clear night sky littered with shimmering stars. The lake was serene, soothing and quiet. The moon shone brilliantly in the dark sky, and it was no longer blocked by a creature of any kind. I looked back, staring at the pictures on my phone.

Regan dragged my mother out of her room to the glass door I stood before. She gave me a confused expression, and I traded it for a concerned one. I showed the photos to her, and we then locked eyes. At least we had evidence.
