"Hello?" Looking up, hearing a child's voice, I was now eye-to-eye with bright, startling green irises. Some random kid walked up to me in the middle of recess. I'd never seen him before. My mind churned with possible answers to why someone had noticed me. I was way at the edge of the playground, near the teachers, underneath a small tree whose leaves and branches bowed beneath the blazing sun. The leaves glistened with raindrops that had patted down onto their smooth faces overnight, and those were that same raindrops that occasionally prodded my nose and cheeks to my annoyance. Staring at the boy, I opened my mouth to speak, but got cut off anyway.

"What are you doing?"

My eyes widened and I felt my ears fall back against my head, a bit embarrassed as my cheeks reddened. I looked down at the brown dust in front of me, and the five rocks I was playing with. One was cub-ish and jet-black; another was creamy yellow and oval-ish; the third was a generic stone, all gray and flat. The rock I held in my right hand was brown and dusty, and the other in my left arm was a maroon river rock— like the ones that we had inside of the creek in my backyard. I was trying to come up with a story about why the river rock and the brown rock became friends, and they could then find the other three and be a big group of friends. The problem though, was that none of them knew each other.

I looked back up at the kid that was now sitting across from me. He had dark brown hair that fell over his eyes and the freckles that covered his face as he looked down. His skin was much paler than mine, and his hair was much tamer than mine. He was wearing an orange t-shirt that had a design that looked like a ghost. I was a little confused. I cocked my head and asked,

"Who are you? And is that shirt from Halloween?"

"I'm Trevor," he said. He repeated, "Trevor Comneer. And no, I just like it." He had the biggest grin on his face. Genuinely concerned, I continued,

"Why? They're scary!"

"That's the point!" he beamed, nearly jumping off the ground it seemed like. "People think they're scary, so they'll think I'm scary! Then, bullies won't bother me!"

I sat there, gently sitting my rocks down like they were my sister's dolls. I looked back at Trevor and squinted. I'd never heard of a plan so elaborate before. It made total sense! I cracked a smile as I giggled,

"Woah! Did it work?"

"You're the first one I've talked to today, so it's going pretty well I'd say."

"That's crazy cool!"

"I know right?" He looked so happy to finally explain his ultimate plan to another student! His hyper energy was contagious— it overtook my loneliness like the switch in my bedroom that Dad flicks to turn on my starry night-lights. It was exciting to me. Looking at the ground, he asked, "Why are you playing with rocks? Don't you have any friends?"

"They're all playing kickball. Don't you have friends?"

"No, not here. I'm new."

That made so much more sense! Trevor was the new kid everyone was chatting about! Taken aback, yet overcome with a surge of empathy and excitement, I gasped and shouted,

"Really? Do you wanna' be friends—"

I pulled my hands and shoulders in and high, away from Trevor as my name was viciously called out by one of the teachers nearby: Ms. Lehrin. She scolded, "Sage, there is no need to scream that loud! You know that—"

"Yes, yes, yes! I want to be your friend!"

Trevor, with nothing but joy in his eyes, radiated something I couldn't explain. All I can say is that it made me feel like I could face anybody head-on, with all the courage and strength in the world on my side. He just interrupted a teacher. We both stood up, fueled with excitement that belonged in a nuclear power plant. Ms. Lehrin tried to continue, but I did first.

"Really? You mean it?"

"Of course! Sage, right?"

"Yeah, that's me!"

"Best friends?" Trevor boomed.

"Best fr—"

"This is what a creek looks like?"

"Yeah. Awesome, right?"

We both ended up in detention for interrupting the teacher. Ms. Lehrin was never the nicest. We were giggling for the whole hour in the principal's office since he wasn't even there. When it came time for pickup, we learned that our moms had worked together when they were younger. Small world, huh? They both thought it was a stupid reason to stay at school for an extra hour, and our moms wanted to catch up, so Mrs. Comneer agreed to pick up both of us from school at four o'clock.

When I crawled into the back seat with Trevor, I saw another boy in the front. Hearing me buckle my seatbelt, he looked over his shoulder at me. It was a little awkward. He looked about nine, with blonde hair, bright blue eyes, and the near-same pale skin that Trevor did. I timidly waved, and he continued to stare back. After some motherly coercion, he told me that he was Trevor's older brother, Brody. He was part of the elementary school basketball team, which was why he was in the car with us in the first place.
