"...and these children
that you spit on
as they try to change their worlds
are immune to your consultations.
They're quite aware

"Saturday... march 24, 1984. Shermer high school, shermer, Illinois. 60062.

Dear mr. Vernon.. we accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong, what we did was wrong. But we think you're crazy to make us write those essay telling you who we think we are, what do you care? You see us as you wanna see us. In the simplest terms, with the most convenient definitions. You see us as a...

a brain,

an athlete,

a cheerleader,

a basket case,

a princess

and a criminal.

Correct? That's the way we saw each other at seven o'clock this morning. We were brainwashed..."

Claire sat in her car shaking her head as she looked at the school in disgust.

"I can't believe you can't get me out of this.." she complained turning towards her father "I mean its so absurd I have to be here on a Saturday!" A smile crossed her fathers face as she spoke "its not like I'm defective or anything..."

"Ill make it up to you" her father promised as he turned his body towards her before reaching into the back and grabbing her lunch bag "honey, ditching class to go shopping doesn't make you a defective" he told her handing the bag to her as he put his hand on her shoulder "have a good day"

And with that Claire rolled her eyes and got out of the car walking towards the school steps, passing a car pulled up against the sidewalk.

Brian sat looking out the window as his mother reprimanded him once again while his little sister sat in the middle, pushed between the two seats

"Is this the first time or the last time we do this?" His mother asked as he turned his head forward but didnt look at her

"Last.." he said a tone in his voice that made it clear he was upset.

"Well get in there and use the time to your advantage..." his mom remarked a snide tone in her voice. Brian let out a sigh as he looked at his mom

"Mom, were not suppose to study. We just have to sit there and do nothing." He told her

"Well mister you figure out a way to study." She snapped as his little sister quipped up between the two seats

"Yeah!" She added causing Brian to stare at her before his mother let out a sigh

"Well go!"

Brian pushed open the door and shut it behind him before his mom took off.

He looked to his left to see another car pull up before walking into the school
