our future

I should be happy for you
that your puzzle pieces have been put together
that your future is now told

I should be happy for you
that you've decided on where you'll go
that you know your place to be
who you'll be

I should be happy
but my want for your joy and my want for my arms around you are conflicting in my mind

I should be happy
but has my future ever crossed your mind?

I have no idea what I'll be
no idea where I'll go
no idea if I'll see you
if our paths will diverge when we leave

I want to plan to be together
even as the years go by
I want to plan to live together
learning side by side
I want you to stay

but this is the present
and so I lay in my bed
thoughts spinning through my head
watching as time flies through my fingertips
until its too late to catch it
and hold it in my palm
to covet the time we thought we had
