The morning felt like light years away. The sun rose at six fifty, it didn't matter though, no one was asleep in the Potter manor that night anyway.
It was Thursday, and Christmas was just two days away, it was not looking to be a very merry Christmas.
Once the sun had risen, they slowly started to drag themselves out of bed. By lunch, despite no one having fallen asleep, all the teens had finally gotten out of bed. Euphemia, on the other hand, hadn't been seen or heard from since the night before.
Eventually, the realization that no one had eaten since lunch at Diagon Alley the day before set in. Although they didn't feel like eating, they had to do so, so Remus volunteered to do the cooking, which Euphemia normally would do.
"I'm going to go check on my mom..." James mumbled, not making eye contact with his friends.
At some point throughout the night, Euphemia managed to leave the sitting room and head upstairs but she still stayed clear of her room. James had heard her walk past his room throughout the night, in the opposite direction as hers.
"Right, you do that," Remus paused, "I'll go make breakfast... or, lunch, I guess."
Sirius went with Remus to the kitchen, not to help, but to do something other than standing in the large, empty house. Fleamont was the only father figure in his life, and he was just taken away from him. Life really sucks.
Regulus and Peter were left alone in silence.
"So," Peter awkwardly began with a voice crack. None of them had talked since Fleamont's body was found.
"Maybe someone should go check on James..." Regulus, although he hated to admit it, he was worried.
"Maybe give him just a few more minutes alone with Euphemia," Peter responded. He could tell that Regulus was worried, but James and Euphemia needed time just the two of them.
"Right, right..." Regulus fidgeted.
"Maybe we should see if Remus needs help in the kitchen," He offered.
"I wouldn't trust anything I were to make, you go, I'll wait here," Regulus sighed, he needed to calm down.
"Right," Peter squeaked before walking to the kitchen, leaving Regulus all alone in the hallway.
Breakfast was just five minutes away from being ready when James ambled down the stairs.
"Is Euphemia joining us?" Regulus asked quietly once James had approached him.
"Yeah, she's just getting changed into fresh clothes," James answered. Regulus nodded in acknowledgement.
The silence was awkward, what were they supposed to say?
"Are you okay?" Regulus finally asked. He hated asking that question, whenever he's ever been asked that question he always awkwardly lies, but that's what you're supposed to say, right? In his dream, James had asked him if he was okay multiple times.
"I- I don't know how to answer that," James responded. Regulus felt stupid, he knew he shouldn't have asked, but it showed he cared, right? He was definitely overthinking things.
"Right, of course, you don't. Um, we should go to the dini- uh...kitchen, for breakfast," Regulus wanted to slam his head into a metal door. They can't eat in the dining room, it smelt like bleach and had a chalk outline of his father's body.
James blankly followed the other. Upon entering the kitchen, it was obvious that the three boys hadn't thought about the dining room either as they were just preparing to bring the plates into the dining room when Regulus stopped them, attempting to wordlessly transfer the message with his mind, which didn't work.
"The dining room is off limits," Regulus reminded them in a hushed voice, making the others go pale. They should have thought about that.
"Fuck," Remus mumbled under his breath. "Okay, we can eat in the sitting room, we'll just prepare the plates in here,"
Euphemia joined the boys in the kitchen after just a few more minutes. She had thrown her hair into a messy bun and was wearing more relaxed clothes than usual, but she did try to fix herself up before going downstairs.
"Good morning Euphemia," Sirius said softly, even though it was actually now the afternoon, but no one wanted to correct him.
"Good morning darling," She said sweetly, but Sirius could see the pain in her eyes.
They all served themselves breakfast and went to sit down. They spent a while staring at their plates of food, but none of them actually finished their whole plate.
After breakfast, they all went back to their own rooms, except Sirius. Sirius went straight to James' room to comfort his best friend.
Sirius knocked gently against the wooden door. "It's me," He called softly.
"Come in Padfoot," He just barely heard James reply.
Sirius turned the doorknob, slowly opened his door and entered his room, he went right over and sat on the edge of James' bed, where he was laying in his bed, on his back.
"Can I hang out with you for a bit?" Sirius asked, already getting himself comfortable.
"Of course Pads," James gave a very slight smile.
"We could get the others and finish that movie, you seemed excited to watch it yesterday," Sirius offered.
"No thanks, I think I'm good, could we just lay here a bit longer?" James asked. He felt exhausted but he also felt as if he had just finished chugging several espressos at the same time, it was not a fun feeling.
"Of course," Sirius said, moving to lay next to his best friend.
While they enjoyed each other's presence, Regulus received yet another howler, once again, from his mother, of course.
He really hated to open it but the longer he waited, the louder it would get and he would really hate to disturb people grieving with the high-pitched cry of his mother, so instead, he opened it straight away with a sigh.
"REGULUS ARCTURUS BLACK!" The howler once again started off with his full name.
"Answer your mother when she puts her time and effort into sending you a letter!" Regulus wanted to yell back at this. What was he supposed to say? She said he better have been in a coma, as far as she knows, he is in a coma.
"If I find out that you skipped out on a family holiday to hang out with your brother, so help me! Yes, I know you've been talking to him, DISGRACEFUL!" Her voice was giving him a migraine.
The whole house could hear the howler. Sirius had stopped breathing from where he layed beside James just to make sure not to miss a word being said. James, Remus and Peter all did the same, it was hard not to listen in.
Walburga might as well have been disowning him right there and then. Regulus started wishing he truly was in a coma. If she knew he was in contact with his brother, that most likely means that she had someone spying on him, probably one of the other Slytherins.
You could have killed Regulus right there and then and he would have thanked you.
