"Hey, uh, I'm trying to catch a ride, do you think you could give me one?" he said.
I just sat there, silent, staring at him.
"Uh... hello?" he waved his hand in front of my face.
I opened the door and stepped out of the car. Was he crazy? Did he not realize how close he was to death? Isn't it common fucking sense not to stand in the middle of a highway?
"Are you crazy?" I yelled.
"Uh, no." he said, a smile on his face.
"I could have hit you.. you.. you idiot!!" I stood there staring at him, waiting for a response.
"Yes, I understand how that must concern you..."
"Uh, ya' think?"I crossed my arms and realized I was soaked, and so was he. I noticed what he was wearing, he had dirty jean pants and a blue button up shirt, a couple buttons were undone. He had on a leather jacket too. He was still standing there waiting for me. I remembered the question he had asked me earlier, and realized he must be waiting for a response.
"Well, where are you going?" I asked.
"Wherever you are." "I'm just trying to stay out of the rain." he said.
"Ok... well why are you out in the rain?"
"I ran away from home."
"Oh..."How ironic, I happen to run into someone running away from home, as I'm running away from home. Maybe he could be a burglar? No... he looks too young for that, he can't be much older than me. He was still sitting there waiting. I stared at him for a second as him and I couldn't get more soaked.
"Okay, get in. Before both of us get pneumonia." I said. I opened the driver's door and got in as he got in the passengers' seat. I put my hands back on the wheel and looked at him with a confused face and shook my head. I looked back on the road and kept driving.
"what?" he asked with a smile.
"Oh nothing, just the fact that you chose to stand in the middle of an effing highway instead off on the side, where it's safe, like a normal person" I scoffed.
"But what if I told you I'm not a normal person" he leaned in a tad closer and smiled.
"Uh. Yeah I think I noticed that when I met you" I said.He leaned back and stared out the window. I saw him smirking in the reflection. What an odd boy. What was I going to do with him? I guess I could drop him off somewhere in South Carolina. I needed to know more about him before I decided.
"So... where are you from?" I asked.
"Here. Tennessee. What about you?"
"Me too." We sat there for a couple silent moments.
"Why did you run away?" I asked.
"My father was abusive; my mom isn't here anymore. I've been planning to escape for a while but I just got fed up and did it tonight. He tried to kill me."
"Oh... I'm sorry..."
"It's all right."I just decided to keep quiet from then on, and just let the rain flood my mind.
