After breakfast I walked out the door and started my car. I got out the magazine Jake had picked up from the store and flipped through the pages to find the hiring catalogue. I circled a few nearby places, started my car and started to drive.I went to a few locations and asked if i could fill out applications. Johns Auto shop, Maries Bakery, Myrtle Beach Grocery store, none of them were hiring though. I had one last stop, Kendras Kafe.
I set the catalogue in my bag, got out of the car and walked up to the door. I opened it and was immediately greeted by the smell of hash browns, bacon, fresh coffee, and biscuits just out of the oven. My mouth watered. The bell ringed as I opened the door and I heard a lady with a heavy southern accent yell from the kitchen "Welcome to Kendras Kafe! Happy dining!"
The same woman hurried out of the kitchen with a platter on each hand. She stopped at the first table and gave an elderly man a cup of coffee "Uh I asked for no creamer in this." He pointed at the cup "Oh, my bad sir I gave you the wrong one." she chuckled. She then took another coffee mug from the other platter and swapped it. She then rushed to the next table that had a single dad and 2 kids. One was a baby and the other a young boy who looked to be about 6. She handed a burger to the dad, chicken strips to the kid, and a juice to the baby "Here you go baby, you enjoy your chicken strips ok?" she said with a smile.
She set the empty platters down on a table and patted her hands. Looking around, her eyes finally met mine. "Well hi there! I've neva seen you around here? You new?" "Yes ma'am." I said, "Just drove here from Tennessee."
"My oh my! Thats a mighty long drive!"
"You're tellin me." I laughed.
"Well, what can I do to help ya today dear?" she said while washing a table.
"Well, I was actually-" She started moving from table to table, picking up dishes. "Walk and talk baby, walk and talk." She said. "Well I was wanting to get a job application?" "Oh sure!" she said. "BENNY!" she shouted into the kitchen, a man with a low bellowing voice yelled "WHAT?" back. "GET THIS YOUNG LADY HERE A JOB APPLICATION WOULD YA?" she shouted. "OK."
I flinched at the yelling, but I'm guessing it wasn't irregular in a busy joint like this.
"That's my husband, Ben." she said in a normal tone.Just then a man with a dirty apron holding a bowl of batter handed the lady a piece of paper. "Here you go baby, and my name's Kendra, I own this place." I shook her hand. "Just come back and let me know if you need anything ok sugar?" "Thanks!" I said.
Finally. This is my one last shot at getting a job, so I better not screw it up.I drove home, application in hand, determined to get this job.
