The Change

I turn my phone back on as I make my way back to my locker on weak legs. 'Amy was right calling it a torture chamber I can barely move after that work out. I seriously need a bath there's no way I'm staying in school smelling this awful.' I send Amy a short report on how it went when a private number popped up on my screen; I picked up "Hello? Hello who is this? I think you have the wrong number." All I hear is heavy breathing then as I was getting ready to hang up I hear the mysterious voice from my nightmare say "arrivederci, see you soon little one" and hung up. I laughed it off as a joke "ha-ha very funny..." I grabbed my stuff and walked out heading straight for my car.

Once inside I take a deep breath to calm my nerves and turned on the radio, I sit back and look at the orange envelope Coach K gave me. Love Drunk by Boys Like Girls starts to play and I cant help but sing along, feeling better and excited I open the envelope to see my SAT score; I squeal with excitement and send Amy a text telling her I passed with a perfect score.

Knowing she wont reply any time soon I back out of the school parking lot and drive home singing along with the radio. I was a couple blocks away when I saw the flashing lights of red, white, and blue. I slowed my car to a crawl making my way through the clutter of cars, that's when I saw the yellow police tape and a crowd of police keeping news reporters away surrounding my house. Everything seemed to move in slow motion as I got out the car making my way through the crowd to get to the police officer who was handing lily over to animal control. "Excuse me that's my dog. What happened? Where's my family?" I asked as I noticed the paramedics begin to load a stretcher into the ambulance. I grab hold of lily's leash. I weaved my way through the crowd and new reporter I ducted under the thin yellow tape and walked to officer in charge "I live here what's going on?" I demanded officer Hunts, according to the name on his jacket turned around and refused to meet my eyes "there's been an accident, our forensic team is in there trying to figure out what happened.

We are taking the bodies in for further examination". I stared at the white blankets that covered my family lifeless body as two more stretchers were rolled out of my house. Lily started to whine and lick my hand franticly as tears run down my face. I ran to the stretchers "Mom.." I wipe the tears away with shaky hands as anger and hopelessness fight in a tangle of emotions that I didn't notice a cop was trying to get my attention. "Ma'am, do you have any one we can call" it sounded like white noise, nothing seemed real, this couldn't be real. Lily started pulling and frantically barking trying to get to the house "Lily what has gotten into you" I try to call her down but she kept pulling and twisting until she slipped out of her collar and dashed into the house. Me and two police officers ran after here. Then everything went silent as if someone put the world on pause, there was so much blood everywhere I forced myself to look away from the bloody mess.

A flash back of the day we first moved here Mom was starting to show her extended belly with baby Buster, I was excited to be a big sister. Mom and dad was so happy and alive. Back to the present I can hear Lily barking and snarling desperately trying to get into the basement fighting against the officers who were trying to pull her away. I opened the basement door and out came the biggest dog I ever seen tackling me to the ground I screamed try to push the dog off me and keep it from trying to kill me. Lily tackled the dog off me snarling wrestling it to the ground, the male dog was easily twice her size. They got into the most bloodiest fight you only see on TV, there was fur and blood coming off them "lily noo!" I yelled as the officer pulled me away from the fight. Lily had the dog by the scruff shaking him violently and jumping away when he snapped his powerful jaws at her. Lily yelped as he caught her leg and pulled her off balance. There was a loud bang and just like that the fight was over.

I ran to lily putting pressure to the giant gash on her side a paramedic came and took over putting lily on a stretcher and rolling her away. Another paramedic walked me to the next room handing me a bottle of water and a blanket as she checked me over and then handing me off to the police "Ma'am, ill drive you back to the station. We called your Aunt she should be there soon." Numb and in shock I nodded and followed him. "Don't worry about you car ill have someone drop it off at the station." I just leaned my head against the window looking at the house as we drove away my hands shaking feeling like the rug was pulled out from under me.

At the station I sipped away at a cup of coffee one of the ladies gave me, she said it would help me feel better while I waited for my Aunt Judy to arrive. My phone starting buzzing in my pocket making my jump, its Amy, apparently she's been trying to get a hold of me this whole time leaving 36 messages and 25 missed calls. I picked up and before I even got the phone to my ear I hear Amy yelling. "Where have you been? I thought you were dead! I saw cops all over your house and when I heard what happened I panicked...where are you? Are you ok? I mean I know your not but how are you holding up?" I started to feel a knot in my throat as tears threaten to pour out of me again "Oh Caitlin... I'm sorry. Where are you? I'll go pick you up and you can stay with me and my folks."
