In preparation for the upcoming tournaments, Tezuka made us work twice as hard and forced us to eat Inui's vegetable drink. Nobody could withstand the taste of that except for Tezuka and Fuji. Tezuka didn't even know he had drunk it until he had drunk it. It had been in Inui's bottle and he had taken Inui's. It's sort of sad how sometimes Inui can't even handle his own drink. I mean, Tezuka didn't pass out or turn blue, but I swear I saw his eye twitch at the taste.
Tezuka was so mean to us sometimes.
"Etsu," Eiji called. "Why aren't you friends with Chibi yet? You're practically the same age."
"Friends with Echizen?" I said as I looked over to see him bantering with Momo. "No thanks. Echizen's not my type of friend. Besides, I have friends from France and America that I made when I went there."
"Oi, alright, Etsu," Eiji said sadly.
"The Kanto Tournaments are tomorrow. Go rest," Tezuka called over the courts. I grinned and then started running way from the courts with ym bag over my shoulder.
"Oi, Eiji!" I shouted, waving a hand in the air as I started running backwards. "Race you to the store!" Yeah, we both needed new grip tape and stuff.
"Etsuko!" Eiji shouted as he ran to catch up. "That's not fair!" I laughed and then ran faster as he started gaining on me. In the end, I beat him to the store and he had to pay for everything I wanted. If he had beaten me I would've had to pay for everything he wanted.
Afterwards we went home and crashed in our room we shared, binging TV until ten that night when we went to bed.The next day we woke up and both fell out of bed from dreariness as our alarms went off.
"Kanto Tournaments!" We both shouted as we fumbled with our stuff and then quickly got changed and ready for the tournaments. I grabbed my stuff and then we both ran straight to the courts as fast as we could.
"Eiji, you're nearly late!" Oishi exclaimed. "This is the first time!"
"It's not Eiji's fault we're late. It's mine," I scowled as I stepped forwards, taking the blame.
Oishi simply regarded me with a cold look. Either he's worried about something with Tezuka, or he's just a brat whom Eiji thinks so highly of. I stuck my tongue out at him and walked up to the sign in booth.
"Hello. I'd like to register for Seigaku," I said politely.
"You're just a kid," the register scowled. "Move it for the real players to come."
"Eiji!" I shouted, waving my arms in the air to get his attention. "He doesn't think I'm a real player," I pouted.
Eiji walked over with a small frown.
"Kikumura-san, please keep other people from trying to impose as a regular on your team," the register said.
"Nobody imposed as a regular," Eiji said, shaking his head.
"Tell that to this little girl," the register scowled, shoving me backwards. I fell into Eiji and he wrapped his arms around me protectively.
"This 'little girl'," Eiji said with a scowl. "This little girl is my sister."
"Your sister, Kikumaru-san?" the register asked with doubt. "Please stop trying to cover for the child. You're too kind."
"Register, we'd like to register for the Kanto Tournaments," Tezuka said as he stepped forwards. "Everyone, sign."
I remained in the back of the group.
"Let Etsuko-kun through. She needs to sign as well," Tezuka said. Everyone mumbled quick apologies as they moved out of my way. I scowled at the register as I quickly scribbled my last name next to Eiji's.
"Seems like I have to make myself known," I glared at the register.
"Tezuka, which slot am I in?" I asked, asking him directly.
"You'll be playing in the doubles 1 slot with Fuji," Tezuka replied. "Prepare yourselves."
"Hai, Captain," we all replied.
"Guess we're already in a real doubles match together," I said as I stood next to Fuji, looking up at him. He smiled at me.
"Hai. This'll be interesting to see how it turns out. I believe Eiji and Momo are up for doubles 2 first," Fuji said. "I'd like to see how this goes."
So Eiji and Momo went out onto the court and held their rackets up.
"Let's do this, Momo!" Eiji shouted cheerfully.
"Hai, Eiji," Momo replied with his own grin.
During the game, Momo would hit the dunks and power shots while Eiji covered the grounds and areas Momo couldn't reach or get to on time. A few times Momo juked them by jumping up with Eiji behind him and then letting Eiji make the dunk instead of him. They won the game 6-4.
After their match it was mine and Fuji's turn.
"Good luck, Etsu!" Eiji shouted when I got onto the court.
"Thank you, Eiji!" I shouted back at him. I raised my racket and then stepped up towards the net against our next opponents. One had silvery hair and the other had brown hair and a hat on backwards.
"Let's put our skills to test, eh, Fuji-san?" I smirked as I tilted my head to one side cockily.
"Hai, Etsuko-kun," Fuji said.
"Let's do this, Fuji!" I shouted happily as I took my position. Fuji served behind me and then I chased after the balls, returning all of them.
"1-love! Kikumaru-Fuji leads!" the umpire shouted. "Shishido-Ootori to serve!"
Ootori served and I chased after it again, managing to reach it, but thent he speed and power of the ball knocked my racket out of my hand. I stared at it as my racket slid into the fence.
"Scut serve!" Hyotei shouted.
"Shake it off, Etsu!" Eiji shouted at me. "You can do this!" I looked over and saw the regulars all giving me a thumbs up. Even Echizen tipped his cap at me but I could see a smirk on his face. And that gave me confidence to win. The next scut serve came and I used two hands, managing to return it, but not in the court. I frowned at the ball and then let Fuji try to return it next time. Like my return, he hit it outside of the court, not as much as mine, but enough to be called an out.
"1-all!" the umpire called. "Kikumaru-Fuji to serve!"
I raised my racket and then slammed the ball with it as hard as I could, the ball blowing back Shishido's cap and knocking it off his head by the intensity of my serve.
"15-love!"
I hit three more ace serves bringing our score to 40-love before they managed to return it. I scowled and then sped up as I leapt into the air and did a hard dunk.
"2-1!"
Ootori served his Scut Serve next and then Fuji returned it, leaving the two of them slightly shocked so they missed the next three shots and then gave us another game. After that they caught up and then we alternated games.
The match ended 7-6, Seigaku.
"Etsu won!" Eiji shouted as I moved back to the bench.
"The next match is Taka-san and Kabaji," Inui muttered. "He copies his opponents abilities and hits." I turned to look over at Inui for a second before turning my attention to Taka who was moving towards the court. He pulled out a Hadokyu shot and forced Kabaji to copy his play. In the end it was a game of stamina and strength. And then in the actual end it was a default loss to both teams.
They both had to go to the hospital to get their hands and wrists checked cause they were both bleeding from using that shot over and over again. It was a shot that took a huge toll on your wrist and arm if you overused it. Luckily when Taka-san came back there were no permanent injuries.
And then it was Fuji's turn again against a sleeping boy named Jirou.
"Jirou!" his teamates were shouting at him. One of them almost kicked him before he sat up and rubbed his eyes sleepily.
"Huh?" Jirou asked.
"You're up," their captain said sternly. "Play well, Jirou." Jirou nodded and sleepily stepped onto court with Fuji.
Fuji let Jirou take the first game and then started playing seriously in the second game.
Jirou served and Fuji immediately returned it with some sort of weird serve. Fuji had hit it and it landed on the baseline, spun and then returned to his hand as it passed right next to Jirou's head.
"A triple counter!" Momo shouted. "That's the Hakugei!"
"The Hakugei is one of Fuji's three triple counters and is also known as the White Whale. He hits a top spin which makes the ball land on the baseline and then fly back into his hand. In order for his triple counters to be effective, Fuji needs wind to make it all work," Inui muttered as he started writing things in his notebook.
"Whoa! That was so cool! Did you see that, Atobe? It went back to his hand! That was awesome!" Jirou shouted. He was like a little kid. He sort of reminded me of Eiji.
"Oi, Eiji," I smirked. "That's your twin." I pointed at Jirou and he laughed brightly as we watched Jirou gush and be amazed at every shot Fuji did.
"Focus, Jirou!" Atobe shouted at him.
In the end Fuji won 6-1.
And then it was Tezuka's turn. Both the captains were national level and he was against Atobe. Atobe threw his jacket in the air as chanting started. He snapped his fingers and then everyone went silent.
"Who's going to win?" Atobe asked loudly.
"Atobe! Atobe! Atobe!" the chanting resumed. And then the two captains got into position. After a few games, Atobe said that Tezuka's arm was hurt. I frowned and stared at Tezuka as I watched him play.
"Tezuka's elbow isn't hurt!" Oishi shouted.
"So it's his elbow," Atobe mused. I scowled. One day I'm going to beat Atobe.
The match continued forever and then they went into a tiebreaker, neither of them scoring two points straight in a row. And then Atobe scored two points in a row, not because of skill, but because of pure luck. Tezuka had hit the ball into the net with his tired arm.
"Game to Hyotei!" the umpire shouted. Tezuka shook hands wih Atobe and then walked off court to have all the regulars run over to him and start pestering him with questions. I walked off like Echizen did. It was Tezuka. He'd be fine. He'll probably need rehab, but he'll be fine in the end.
I went over to the vending machine and bought a Ponta before heading to a tree and dozing off underneath it.
"That's my tree," Echizen's voice said bluntly, waking me up. I stuck my tongue out at him.
"Find a different tree," I replied.
Echizen scowled before walking off and falling alseep under a new tree.
"Etsuko! Etsuko!" Eiji's voice was shouting.
"Echizen! Echizen!" Momo shouted.
"Tezuka's going to Germany for rehab!" the two of them shouted together.
I looked up at Eiji and blinked before the news settled in.
"It's Tezuka. He'll be fine in Germany, besides, Germany has multiple different Pro tennis players there. It'll be good for Tezuka," I said. "Oishi's going to be our captain in acting then?"
"Hai!" Eiji shouted. "But Tezuka's gone!"
"I know. You and Momo screamed it in mine and Echizen's face. Tezuka will be fine. He'll be a worry butt as usual, but he'll be fine," I said.
"Hai. Alright," Eiji sighed. "Tezuka said we should go home and rest. We can say goodbye to him tomorrow before he gets on his plane."And so the next morning we all went to the airport to say goodbye to Tezuka. I admit, I was sad, so I ended up hugging him and Eiji had taken a picture.
"You better come back in one piece, Tezuka," I said as I pulled away.
"No worries," Tezuka replied before boarding his train after one more goodbye from all of us.
I sighed as I watched him leave. Our captain was gone and this is just the beginning of our matches.
