Eddie had been my best friend since I could walk. Our fathers had been best friends and while they were both gone now, the two of us still stood tall together. He was the only person that stood up for me against our schoolyard bullies, and continued to stick up for me throughout high school.
We were thick as thieves, always together and always in some sort of trouble. Although I was two years younger than him, I had just graduated high school in June and Eddie was still in his third senior year.
I spent the summer across the country working with my dad before I returned to Hawkins to take a year off and decide what I wanted to do with my life. Eddie was upset we wouldn't spend the summer together but he was happy to know I'd be exploring the west coast.
I would be lying if I said I hadn't grown feelings over the years. I had painted a picture of our future in my mind and only hoped Eddie felt the same way. Although he had never hinted at liking anyone, I still sometimes worried he may develop feelings for someone else while I was gone.
This didn't stop me from sending many letters and calls to my best friend, however.
Eddie didn't know when I would be coming back and I was excited to surprise him.My mom picked me up from the airport early in the morning and took me out to breakfast.
I knew today was a school day so I decided to wait until later to visit Eddie. As three o'clock grew nearer I became more impatient. I decided to leave early and wait by Eddie's van to scare him.
My mom quickly dropped me off in the parking lot and smiled as she drove off.
I watched the sky as I waited peacefully until I heard the front doors open as kids began to bustle through them.I stood happily behind the van as I looked through the back windows to catch a glimpse of him. After a few minutes I saw a blur of his hair running towards his van as I heard him laughing.
The sound was like music to my ears as I hadn't heard it in so long.
Just as I was about to turn the corner and surprise him I saw a flash of blonde hair running behind him and paused for a moment.
Eddie had stopped to face a girl as he held her hand. I felt my heart fall out of my ass as he leaned in to give her a light kiss on the cheek.
"Don't forget you're coming over to meet my parents later, and make sure you wear a shirt that covers your tattoos!" The girl exclaimed as she pointed a finger at him.
"I know, babe, I know." Eddie sighed out.
"Well I need to remind you or else you'll forget since you smoke so much weed. You've been cutting down right?" She asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Yes, Carla. I haven't smoked since the weekend." Eddie sighed out again.
"Okay good. If you stop smoking, you'll be able to focus and graduate so we can go to college together next year. I'm going to be really upset if you don't graduate. I don't want some loser boyfriend." The girl, Carla, said as she crossed her arms.
"I told you I would stop didn't I?" Eddie asked defensively.
Carla scoffed and glared at him.
