"Nas is Shani home yet?" I asked Nas over the phone as soon as he picked up. I hoisted myself up onto my kitchen counter and sat down. I yawned as I waited for him to respond.

Between all the illegal fireworks and/or gunshots, ducking Jay's phone calls, and trying to get in touch with Shani, I barely got any sleep last night.

I blocked Jay but he just started calling me from different numbers and shit. The calls eventually stopped once he realized that I wasn't going to answer. And I pulled up to Shani's crib this morning trying to apologize to her but she wasn't home. So I've been checking in with Nas now and again.

"Yeah, she just got home. Lemme go give her the phone," he replied.

"Nas stop barging in my room without knocking or one of these days Imma smack the shit out of you," I heard Shani say to him.

"Nini on the phone. She wanna talk to you," Nas said to her, ignoring her threats.

"I don't care. Get the fuck out!" I heard her yell followed by two loud bangs.

"Aight chill! Chill! I'm leaving! Nah you gotta come talk to her yourself cus you got her throwing shit at me when I ain't even do nothing," he said after closing the door to her bedroom.

"I'm sorry Nas...Thanks for trying to help me," I sighed.

"It's cool. But you owe me. She hit me in the stomach with a full bottle of water...Fuck. I gotta go, Nini. I feel like I'm bout to throw up now," he groaned before hanging up in my face.

"Damn," I said as I looked at my phone screen.

"She still don't wanna talk to you?" Kay asked as he walked into the Kitchen.

"You scared the shit out of me! Don't sneak up on me like that!" I jumped at the unexpected sound of his voice.

It wasn't that scary. But I'm running off of a couple of hours of sleep. So I'm not the most alert right now.

"I ain't even sneak up on you. Stop tryna avoid my question. What y'all got going on?" Kay asked as he came and stood in front of me in between my legs.

"Nothing," I replied.

"Stop lying." He brought his hand up and smacked me on my thigh.

"Ow! Don't do that," I said as I smacked his chest.

"My bad crybaby. I ain't mean to hit you that hard," he laughed while rubbing his hand over the spot he'd just smacked.

"Kay, back up," I said as I tried to push him away.

"No. It was an accident and I apologized. Stop acting like that," he said as he stayed planted right where he was.

"No cus you being mad irritating," I whined.

"Okay, Imma chill now. Where'd Dougie go?" He asked trying to change the subject. I simply shrugged my shoulders.

Dougie left before Kay woke up and he told me where he was going but I forgot.

He looked at me with a weird expression but moved on trying to ignore my unwillingness to participate in the conversation.

"Your birthday in two days, you excited?" He asked while looking at me closely watching to see if I would perk up at the mention of my birthday.

"I guess," I shrugged again.

"Yo, you being mad weird right now," Kay said after he smacked his lips.
