I was sleeping when someone knocked urgently on my door."Who the hell could this be at this hour?" I groaned to myself as I got up to open the door.
When I opened the door, there was Criston.
"What could you possibly want at this hour?" I asked him.
Criston looked at me worriedly before taking a deep breath.
"It's about your husband, my lady." He said slowly.
Just like that, it was like I was hit by a tornado. I already knew what he was going to tell me. I could tell from the regret on his face.
"Is he...?" I asked as I stopped myself from crying.
"I'm afraid so." He said looking down.
"H-How?" I asked as a tear ran down my face.
"A fire." He told me. "Harwin didn't make it. Neither did Harold and Lyonel."
As I started to process, I started sobbing. Criston quickly stepped closer to me, and wrapped his arms around me, allowing me to cry on his shoulder.
"I'm so sorry, Mary." He whispered.
"Did you do it?" I asked.
"No. I could never, you should know that." He said as he looked into my eyes. "But I think we know who it was..."
"Who?" I asked with furrowed eyebrows.
"Who has suddenly been spending quite some time with a member of the Strong family?" He asked me.
"Alicent..." I said wide eyed. "How could she step so low?" I asked in disbelief.
"She will do everything she can to bring Rhaenyra down, and make Aegon heir to the throne." He told me.
"I know... and this way, Larys would become Lord of Harrenhal..." I concluded.
"That is correct." He said with a nod.
"I cannot believe this... I-my sons... they will be crushed." I told him.
"Just like you are." He said as he tried to sooth me by stroking my hair. "If it wasn't for me-"
"Stop. You did not kill them, Criston. Sure, it was unfortunate of you to make my husband be exiled, but that would not last long. Now Alicent on the other hand... that was simply vile." I told him.
"Mother?" Alex asked as he walked towards me, holding Ed's hand.
"Hi, baby. You should be in bed." I said as I quickly wiped my tears.
"Why are you crying?" He asked me.
"Uh... I just got some bad news, honey." I told him.
"Is it about father?" This child was almost 5, but was damn smart for his age.
"Yes." I nodded sadly. "I'm sorry, darling, but... father is not coming back."
"What?" He asked me as he started crying. "No, no. I want father. I want my father!" He cried as he hugged my legs.
"I know you do, sweetheart." I said hugging him as we both cried.
Ed was too young to understand what was going on, so Criston simply grabbed him and held him, as Alex and I cried together over our loss.
That was two days ago. After that, we went to Harrenhal for the funerals, and now we were on Driftmark, because apparently, Laena Velaryon had also passed away on the same night. This being Laena's funeral, meant that Daemon would be present. Was I ready to see him? No. Did I have to be? Yes.
