Mia’s POV:

Twisted, connected, passionate, death!

Twisted, connected, passionate, death

Twisted, connected, passionate…death

Twisted, Isn’t my life already twisted enough, connected, With what? with whom? Passionate, never heard of this feeling before. In my childhood days, I might be passionate once but not anymore. This Feeling died long ago. Death, Who’s death? I lost everything years ago. What more could I lose? Was it me? Was it about my death? I clutched the tray tenaciously. Death! Just the mere word sends shudders through my whole body. Funny, coming out of the mouth of the girl who wants to die. No actually pathetic. I’m pathetic, I’m now afraid of this word when I want to embrace it. Perhaps I’m scared because I’m in my right mind. Cause when those darkest days appear I feel myself drowning in them. Numbness spreads through my body like an illness. Death sounds beautiful at that time. I shrugged off the thought and went to serve wine to a group of bachelorettes. They hollered at the dancers' movements. I flinched a little. I pour wine into each cup and one cupped my hips, squeezing it. He pulled me harshly as I plummeted on his lap. He sniffled me like a dog before he bit my cheek. I stifled a moan.

"You're one tasty thing." His lusty eyes roamed over me, licking his lips, and devouring me with his gaze before a crooked smile passed on his face. Thing! That's what we are, a thing. A thing that is made to be used and thrown away. A thing whose worth is only a few gold coins. A thing that doesn't have its thoughts and desires. A thing that is meant to please its owners. Yes! that's what we are. He released me and I immediately prowled away. From the corner of my eye, I noticed at the far corner, a wholly adorned cabin with a sheer golden fabric and a few beaded vines juggling from there. It was madam ching's cabin. I noticed a few royal guards standing on either side guarding it. Strange! who's here? I immediately went to where Alina was standing.

"Don't they have a duty to do? Why they're here in their uniforms?" I whisper-talked to her, eyeing them suspiciously.

"Haven't you heard the rumors going on?" I looked at her bemused. Rumors! I haven't heard of any. Yet!. Probably because I'm just so consumed in myself these days that I ignored whatever news roamed over this place. This place is disgusting but you can't deny the fact that Dong INN is the best spot for gossip. You'll hear every kind of gossip running around the kingdom.

"For a few days, they're taking girls from the INN. The king and prince order for them." I scoffed!

"What's new? Officials of higher courts order for girls every time" she shook her head.

"They do! But those girls return but the scary thing is that the girls they bought are missing. Rumors has it, maybe those girls are living as a concubine in the palace and some say maybe they…died."

A chill suffused my whole existence. Died! Death!. Again this word. I shrugged the chills away and refocused on Alina.

"I'm scared Mia. I don't want to be the one. They're here for a girl again I suppose and I'm scared what if I get chosen." There was a sheer terror in her voice that didn't leave unnoticed. I tried to reassure her but the thought lingered in my mind for too long. What if I get chosen? I re-questioned Alina's question to myself. Being a concubine means leaving one hell for another, and death means freedom, a tormenting one.

—------------------------------------------------------

I sauntered by Alina’s room when I heard some faint voices.

"Congratulations Alina, consider yourself lucky, you’ve been chosen for his highness."

"What? No please madam ching, I don’t wanna go there."

Oh lord! No. I peeked inside her room from the keyhole. Madam ching was facing me and Alina was standing in front of her, her back visible to me. A smile painted on madam Ching's face screamed nothing but fakeness. She stepped closer, taking Alina’s elbow in her little evil fist, and throwing her at the guards. She shrieked. Her face is aghast. She squirmed in their hold.

I saw kids running in the field, a young handsome man running after them, and you at the threshold of a house smiling while looking at them. You’ll have freedom, Alina

I remembered the words that the fortune teller told us. This is unfair to her. What will happen to her if she will go there? She’ll never be able to see that future she deserves, the one she’d been told is waiting for her.

Twisted, connected, passionate, Death

My fortune was not clear enough but one thing was for sure. Death is written in my fate so be it this one. A sacrifice for my friend. I’d be happy if she would be able to live her dream. I pushed the doors open. All of the faces turned toward me. Some bemused ones, and one specific furious one. Madam ching gave me a nasty look.

“Madam ching, I will go in her stead, please” I uttered those words. Alina gaped at me and I gave her a subtle nod. Madam ching held a bemused expression trying to search through my soul. I squirmed under her gaze.

“As long as I’m getting paid I have no problem sending anyone” She waved her hand and the guards released Alina. She raced to me and engulfed me in a hug.

“What are you doing Mia?” She whispered in my ear.

“You have a future ahead, Mine have death already written on it,” I whispered back. She snuggled her face in the crook of my neck. I felt liquid dripping on my flesh. Madam ching raised her eyebrow and went outside. The guards trailed behind her giving us space. I pulled back wiping her tears.

“Why are you crying? Pabo” I smiled at her. She shook her head in return. Her tears again dousing her eyes. Her face turned crimson.

“I don’t deserve you, Mia”  Her voice cracked. If she keeps crying like this, all my courage will wither away and I won’t be able to go. I already felt my legs weak. I grabbed her arms.

“ You don’t have to cry for me, it’s not like I’m gonna die, what if I ‘ll live there as a…concubine.” That last word came out forced.

“So don’t worry about me and take care of yourself. I need to leave now they’re waiting for me” I offered her a last hug and left her room before I would lose and shred in pieces in front of her. I excused them and went to change and get ready to meet his highness.
