"Mom, what does Sam do for a living?"
"He's a solo merc David, he takes missions."
"You mean he does gigs?"
"Only light ones, Sam says he's mostly retired."
"Mom, do you think he can get into the Afterlife club?"
"We stay away from those matters David, Sam wants to keep us away from the shady stuff, it's for our own good. You got yourself a better future David, you go a good school, have good education, I don't want you risking your life for a living in the future, do you understand?"
"Yea..."
"Don't mention about any of this when he comes to visit tomorrow alright?"
"Aright, alright..." (exasperated)

Watson District, Afterlife bar 12:30 in the afternoon. January 2075
"Buenos días, V my amigo, and you must be the legendary merc who took down fuckin MaxTac."
"You must be Jack Welles! Samuel Rodrigues, solo merc, V told me about you when I met him."
"Por favor, it's Jackie, not Jack."
"Now that we've introduced ourselves, let's get down to the business."
Said V,
"recently the NCPD racked up their security measures by a couple levels, mercs everywhere are lookin' out for themselves, missions have been tight these couple dayz, that why I'm thinking that people like us should pull off one big gig to set us up for life and then retire."
"Give it to us straightforwardly V, don't go beating around the bush with your amigo, I know you contacted Samurai, is this about them?"
Jackie asked impatiently.
"Samurai is interested in all three of us, Jackie, they want us to pull off a huge gig with them, the Euros we get will set us for life, especially you Sam, Rogue said that you could be a crucial part of their plan."
"Is it 'cause of those so called MaxTac people? They sure offered me a good dance."
Asked Sam, he was already trying to guess what the gig is going to be.
"Exactly, we might end up facing mercs from Arasaka like Adam Smasher, and maybe MaxTac too, and they're not even what I'm most worried about. Rogue said that we'll need all the force we can get."
V maintained his serious tone.
"Alright, Sammy boy is interested, I take it we can get the details of this gig from Miss Rogue?"
Asked Sam nonchalantly.
"Exactly, we meet here again this time here tomorrow, Rogue will fill us in on the exact info on the gig."
V concluded.
"Two more questions," asked Sam, "first question, you were talking about how Smasher isn't who you're most worried about, so who are you most worried about?"
"Goro Takemura, the Emperor's bodyguard, we don't know much about him like Smasher, but to be able to become the Emperor's bodyguard, he must be a real threat."
"Second question, you told me about this gig before I even decided to join, you're not worried that I'll leak your plan to Arasaka or something like that?"
"The first minute I met you and I knew you're not that kinda person, I know it when I see people like us, you're like us Sam."
Declared V.
"Yes amigo, we can see it in your eyes, V decided to take a risk and trust you, so I do too. You gotta have some guts in this city, amigo. When everything else is taken away from you, at least this is what you have left."
Jackie chimed in.
"You're right," smiled Sam, "you can find anything and everything in Night City, but a true heart is always hard to come by."
They stood up and toasted each other with their cocktails.
P.S. Takemura got his cyberware disabled in the 2077 game by Arasaka after Yorinobu killed Saburo, we don't know how Strong he really is, but in my headcanon he was and is, and will always be stronger than Smasher, I'll try to give him some pretty sick powers in this fanfic.
