The next morning was a surprise. I woke up to Soda hugging me from behind. I turned around to see Soda was still fast asleep. I gave Soda a kiss. "Come on, sleepy head, we have to get up for work," I said. He slowly opened his eyes. "Five more minutes," he groaned. He pulled me closer. "If you don't, I'll eat your cake," I told him. He looked at me like I was lying. I just smiled. He sighed and got up. I also got up and headed to the bathroom. I went to the bathroom to put some makeup on to cover my bruises. Afterwards, I went to the kitchen. Darry already put breakfast on the table. Dally was almost done. Two-bit and Steve just kept on talking with their mouths full. I just ignored them and sat down. After a while, when Darry walked we all stopped eating.

"As y'all know the rumbles coming up," he said. Soda healed my hand under the table. "It's a classic fist fight. Don't try to get into any other fights with the Socs until then, you guys know the rules." We nodded. Then Darry looked at Dally. "Dally you need to get those boys back tomorrow or I'll skin you alive," he said. "Oh come on Darrel, I don't know where they are," he lied. "We still need them even though we got Shepard's gang and the {something} boys," he said. I looked at the time. "Guys we have to get to work," I pointed out. Soda, Steve and I all got up, got our things and headed out the door. We got in the car and waited a bit for Darry. When he finally got into the car we finally took off.

When we arrived at DX some rich dude was standing outside the shop. 'I'll take care of him, you too go inside," I told the boys. They reluctantly go inside. I approached a man. "Can I help you sir?" I asked him. He looked at me up and down. "You work here?" He asked. I nodded. But he just rolled his eyes. "I need a paint job on my car done by today," he said. I just stared at him. "You think we can paint a car in one day?" I asked. "Less than a day actually I'm picking it up in six hours," he replied. He threw me the keys. "Bright red," he said and walked off. After, I just walked into the shop. "What did the dude want?" Steve asked. I threw him the keys. "The man left his car to be painted bright red and picked it up in six hours," I said.

"Six hours, is he crazy?" Soda asked. Steve went to get the car. "I don't know but paint doesn't dry that fast," I said. "What about fans? They could dry the car faster," Soda suggested. "Yeah but we don't have enough fans," I said. Steve walked back in. "Ok if were going to finish this on time we all have to work on it," Steve said. Soda got up and we all headed to the garage. It was a white, beat up, mustang. Some scratches on the side but nothing paint couldn't fix. Steve handed us paint cans. "Let's get to work," I said. We all started on opposite sides of the car. We tried to paint as fast as we could. After an hour and a half the whole car was painted. When we stood up and looked at car, we were all impressed. But when I looked at Soda, I started dying laughing. He had red paint all over his hands, face, clothes, and hat. "What is it?" He asked me. I tried to speak but my stomach hurt too much to speak. After a few minutes I finally caught my breath.

"Its everywhere," I managed to say. He looked at himself. "Oh my god Darry's going to kill me," he said. I managed to pull myself together. I went over to him and took off his hat. "I can probably get it out," I told him. He tried to take the hat back. I moved it away from his reach. "At a price of course." He looked at me like I was serious. He sighed. "What do you want?" He asked. "I get half of your chocolate in the morning for a week and you have to give me a kiss," I told him. He smiled. "Ok cupcake. You've got yourself a deal," Soda said. "Come on guys its time for our break," Steve said. We started to head inside and I grabbed a bag of salt and vinegar chips from the shelf. I sat on the counter and we all started to talk. First we laughed about the red paint on Sodapop's cloths and how it looked like he got beat up.

"Wait, what are you going to do if you can't get it out?" Steve asked. I sat there for a second. "I can get it out but if I can't... you just have to look like that until we find a paint to cover it up," I said. "There's a chance you can't get it out?" Sodapop asked. I nervously laughed. "Sort of..." I said, stuffing a chip in my mouth. Soda looked at me wide eyed. "Ok when have you ever doubted me?" I asked. Soda stayed silent. "Exactly." I handed him a chip. "Come on we only have another hour and a half on our shift we can survive," Steve said. A customer walked in. We were just all talking so I didn't really paid attention to who it was. I went behind the counter and gave Soda a kiss on his cheek. We kept on talking until the customer slammed two packs of beer on the table. I looked up to see it was my dad.

I quickly stopped smiling and my heart sank. It felt like my world had just been turned upside down. I started to hold my breath, waiting for him to go away. While Steve just stared at him, Soda looked pissed. He just held my hand and didn't say anything. "You look offaly familiar," my father said to Sodapop. "You too," he replied. He seemed angry but kept completely calm. "Just the packs of beer," my father said. As Soda rang him up, I just looked at him. "Hello Coco," he said to me. A tear almost formed in my eyes. It was like some had just stabbed me. "Hello father," I replied. When I looked at Steve his eyes just darkened. Like he grew a hatred for my father. When he paid and left, I let go of the breath.

I tried to breathe but it seemed like a weight was pulling me underwater. Soda just got up and hugged me. "Shh. It's ok he's gone he's not going to hurt you," Soda reasherded me. The way he spoke was so calming. I was just relaxed. For the rest of our shift I just sat with Soda. He comforted me and just kissed me at random points. When he kissed me I just smiled. I couldn't help it. It was like the kisses were just magically making me feel better. When our shift ended and Darry picked us up, Soda refused for me to walk. So he just picked me up bridal style and carried me to the car. When we got back to his house, he carried me inside and threw me on the couch. He sat next to me and I put my head on his shoulder. We just sat there in silence for a few minutes. I could tell neither him nor I wanted to talk about what happened.

Suddenly Soda just looked at me. "Coco," he said. I sat up and looked at him. "You know I would do anything for you right?" He said. I nodded. He put his hand on my cheek and smiled. "He's never going to hurt you again as long as I'm here," he said. I started to fell a tear stream down my face. Soda just wiped it away. "I know," I said, my voice cracking. Soda just hugged me and gave me a forehead kiss. "Your safe," he whispered. I just closed my eyes and listened to the sound of Sodapop's voice. "Come on, Darry wants us to start dinner," he said. I looked at him. "You barely know how to make eggs," I said. He started to laugh. "Yeah but he said hopefully that here, I don't burn down the house," he explained. I got up and put out my hand. "Let's go," I said. When Soda took my hand, I pulled him and we walked to the kitchen.

As Soda started to make eggs, I tried to look for some grape jelly in the fridge. "Seriously, you guys don't have grape jelly but have the ingredients to make it?" I said. "Yeah sorry I ate it all," he apologized. Then he just gave me an idea. I pulled out the grapes and white sugar. Then I pulled out a bowl and a fork. I filled a bit with water and added the ingredients. I started to mash it up. "What are you doing?" He asked. "Making jelly," I responded. After a while the jelly and the eggs were finally ready. We also toasted some bread and made egg and jelly sandwiches. When we had dinner, Soda couldn't stop putting jelly on his food. "Soda stop inhaling the jelly," Darry told him. "I'm sorry but this is good jelly," Soda said. Darry started to look confused. "I thought we ran out of jelly yesterday," Darry said. "Yeah Coco made it from scratch," he said, with his mouth full. Darry Looked at me impressed. "What can I say. I like to make things," I said.
