The next morning Dani woke up with a start and woke Jack up
''Darling what's wrong?'' he asked her concerned
''Nothing is wrong'' she said with a smile'' I felt the baby kicking that's all''
They both smiled with delight
''I can't believe this is really happening'' Jack said with pride ''we're going to be parents''
''I just hope now that we've got rid of Roger we'll be safer here and things will settle down'' Dani said ''I worry about the sort of conditions we'll be bringing our baby into''
''Don't worry everything will be better now. Roger was the biggest threat and I can keep the others under control''
''Even Maurice? I mean it was nice of you to give him and his friends another chance but are you sure you can trust them?''
''Listen all I can say is I better be able to trust them. Everyone watched Rogers's punishment last night and heard the agony he was in, if any of them want to challenge me then they will be next to go on the bonfire and I will warn all the boys that they face this punishment and see how many of them are brave enough to risk it''
Later Jack gathered everyone together to inform them that the death penalty, specifically death by burning, could be used on any of them if they deserved it. Maurice and his friends sat in silence while Jason and a few of the others seemed to approve
Jack spent the afternoon daydreaming about his future with Dani and their baby. If they ever got off this island they could get married, and have more kids. He could get a high-paying job and they could have a nice house, a nice car, everything. He wondered if the baby would be a boy or a girl and which would he prefer. He decided he'd prefer a son but Dani would probably prefer a daughter. He felt happy thinking about the future and Dani
Then Jason and a few of the other boys came to find him, they looked very upset
''Jack, Sir, we have some very bad news for you'' Jason told him, fighting back tears
Dani was lying, face down on the ground, dead. Her head had been smashed in with a rock that was lying nearby. Jack knelt beside her in tears
''Try and find who did this and do it quickly'' Jason demanded to the other boys who were all just standing around looking ''See if you can find a boy with blood on him. after he hit her he must have got blood on himself and he must have run off to wash, try and catch him NOW!''
All the boys rushed off to try and find the culprit and Jason stayed with Jack who was crying uncontrollably
''We should help try and find the culprit'' Jason said
''I can't leave her'' Jack sobbed ''I know I am a bad person but I did love her, I really did''
''Yes, I know. We have to face the facts now. Roger might not have been the one attacking people. At least this time we know it can't have been him and if it wasn't him this time it means it might not have been him the other times too''
''Yes there is a soldier killing people'' Jack said ''We've gotta take him down before he kills anyone else. But there are no winners, in war, only survivors''
''Will you come now and help look for him?''
Jack refused ''No I can't go anywhere yet. What if you knew her And found her dead on the ground How can you run when you know?
Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been done long ago
