The punishment pit was a deep hole dug into the ground, so deep that once a boy was thrown in it he could not get back out. The only way out was when the ladder, made from tree branches tied together with different grasses and weeds, was lowered down for him to climb out. The hole would be covered up with branches and shrubs at the top to block out the light so the boy in the pit would be left in total darkness, No one was allowed to talk to the punished boy while he was in the pit but watermelons and coconuts would be tossed down every day so that he would stay hydrated and not die. He would also be given very limited amounts of food, but only something basic, no meat. He had no choice but to pee and shit right there which would cause a horrible stink. Jack had decided to set the minimum time in the punishment pit to 1 week and the maximum to 1 month. The punishment pit was a terrifying punishment that would only be used for the more serious crimes.
As if it wasn't already bad enough Jack also said that more than one boy could be thrown down there at a time, despite there being hardly enough space for one boy he was quite sure that 3 or 4 boys could be punished together piled on top of each other
It had been slow and laborious work to build, easy at first but as the hole got deeper and deeper the boys had to jump down and fill tiny coconut shells with soil and pass it up the ''tree branch ladder'' It took many hours of slow progress. They also had to use pieces of rock and stone to dig with, it was hard work.
Eventually, Jack decided it was deep enough much to everyone's relief
''You may all rest now and later we will eat'' he told the tired and dirty boys ''get on your knees and worship me for 1 hour now''
The boys were tired and wanted to sleep but they all did as they were told and knelt before Jack. All of them except for Maurice that is. Feeling tired, angry, and rebellious Maurice refused to kneel
''What are you waiting for Maurice?'' Jack demanded ''Get on your fucking knees and worship me now''
''No, Sir, I won't, this is ridiculous. We've all worked so hard that we deserve to rest now, not fucking kneel down and worship. You're abusing your power too much now Sir''
''You want to rest do you, Maurice? Ok you can rest''
And Jack ordered the others to grab Maurice and throw him down the pit
''YOU CAN REST DOWN THERE FOR THE MAXIMUM OF 1 MONTH!'' Jack yelled down at Maurice in the pit ''GIVES YOU PLENTY OF TIME TO THINK ABOUT HOW TO SHOW YOUR LORD SOME RESPECT!''
The other boys were silent and shocked, except for Roger who was excited as usual.
