She retched over the bowl as yet again her body and ultimately her unborn child expelled what they didn't want. Two weeks had passed and the symptoms that Banner had told her she could expect had well and truly taken hold. Some days it would last only for the mornings and others she'd be walking around nauseous from dawn until dusk.
Steve woke and looked over to see Tess hunched over, before she stepped back and wiped her mouth. "Tessie? You alright?"
"Yeah...baby ain't liking food...or mornings either". She braced herself against the drawer, feeling another wave of nausea hit. He got up and walked over, pulling her hair from her face and holding it back as she threw up once again. "My god, you have a lot to fucking answer for Rogers." She now cursed him.
"It would've only happened anyway".
He was surprised it hadn't sooner. They'd been at it numerous amounts of nights. Her stamina being on par with his. But what had he been expecting?
"I swear if your dick ever comes near me again, then I'm gonna be serving it to you on a silver platter".
"Just as well we ain't got one then". He smirked, now receiving a punch to the stomach from his wife. "Ow! Jesus Tessie!"
"Now you can share the feeling I currently have". She smiled sweetly at him.
She knew that she probably wouldn't make for a very good mother, but she could try to be how she had imagined her own would have been if she'd survived Tess' birth. Raise their child to be nothing like how she was brought up. Sarah had seemed to have done a good job when it came to Steve in some respects. Tess knew that any advice she may need then she could always lean upon her.
Her mother-in-law had been ecstatic on hearing the news, also scolding Tess, just like Steve had, for walking into a shootout knowing of her condition.
But then there was the 'what if'. What if she ended up like her mother had and would never see him grow. It was a dangerous thing to bring a child into the world, but whether you made it was for the hands of fate to decide. Some women could pop out eight or more children, whereas others like her mother hadn't been so lucky.
Still, she couldn't afford to ponder on it. She'd always welcomed the chance of death like an old friend, but had always thought she'd go out as a result of a bullet or even a noose.
"Y'know I'm starting to think this baby's making you turn into a real bitch". Steve smirked, "And you can't even tell yet".
Tess turned to him as she dressed. "Do you wanna live to see your child come into the world? Or would you like me to bury you alongside my brother out on Vormir Plains?"
"Now that's just offensive". He smirked, "why the hell would I wanna share a resting place with your brother?"
"You're going the right way about it".
She rinsed her mouth with some clean water and the pair headed into the kitchen where Sarah was making a start on breakfast. "Oh fuck..." Tess clamped her hand over her mouth and disappeared back into the bedroom.
"I'm gonna go and see Wanda later on to see whether she's got any kinda stuff to help with her sickness". Sarah smiled pitifully, "stir this for me".
Walking into the bedroom she smiled, coming over to Tess and holding her hair as once again she threw up. "I was exactly the same when I was carrying Steve. Little bastard didn't let me keep anything down for sometime, but gradually it passed".
"This feels never ending". Tess groaned as she lifted her head up.
"It will do, best thing you can do is rest. It's what's good for you and baby". She coaxed her to the bed and sat her down. "I'll get rid of this, you get your night gown back on and get into bed. You're not going nowhere today".
Tess tried to protest but against Sarah it was pointless. Instead she did as she was told and went back to rest. Steve coming in after he'd had breakfast and kissing her head.
"Doing as your told for once? Well, this is new".
"I'm gonna throw up all over you". She threatened.
He chuckled. "Just rest, Ma will take care of you, I'll come back and see you at lunch".
She nodded as he missed her hand and then left to start his work for the day.
Sarah came in a couple of hours later with a cup. "Drink this, it'll curb the nausea".
Tess sniffed it and wrinkled her nose. "What's in it?"
"Wanda gave it to me, trust me, it's ok - I got a remedy for my back last year and it did me the world of good".
"Okay..." Tess replied, unsure but drank it down all the same, wanting to throw up almost immediately. "That's vile!"
"Which means it'll work then". Sarah rubbed her back and took the cup. "Get some sleep, I'll see how you are and whether you can stomach food in a couple of hours".
Tess lay there for a short time before drifting off once more, wishing for the symptoms to subside so she could at least try and feel some enjoyment at the life she was carrying inside of her.
The life that she never thought she could or would have created with a man such as Steve Rogers
