I felt so numb in the aftermath of what had happened over the break. I knew I was withdrawing from my friends but I just couldn't stand to face one more thing happening. I felt completely spent. I had taken to spending most of my time in the library or, when the weather permitted, outside in the grounds.

Lily, Mary and Alice had more or less given up on me. We were cordial, and I spoke to them when I had some energy, but otherwise I kept to myself.

Sirius had tried to speak to me several times when he got back to Hogwarts but I just couldn't be around him. Horrifically, every time he came near me, I cried involuntarily like a mad woman. Potions was torture and even Slughorn noticed that there was something amiss.

"Please Miss Famke," He pleaded with me for the third lesson in a row, still getting my name wrong, "this cannot continue..." Sirius, as he had done whenever we were near each other, stared at me, a frown etched into his face.

I just couldn't help myself. I felt trapped and pathetic for not being able to better my situation but I had to admit it to myself, after everything that had happened, the tenuous thread I was holding onto, the only thing that was keeping me happy, had snapped and I was dangerously depressed.

"Professor," Said a solemn voice from behind me, "perhaps it would be best if Black and I traded places?"

"Ah, Severus, yes. I think that may be for the best. Sirius, my boy, please trade places with Severus." Instead of complying, he kicked the nearest cauldron over and in a temper, stomped out the classroom. Frank suddenly started screaming. Whatever had been in the cauldron wasmore like acid than a strengthening solution.

Severus pulled me out of the way but I barely noticed what was happening.

I sat on the dock watching the dark water one Saturday and faintly heard footsteps behind me. Someone sat down beside me and robotically I turned to see Severus looking at me grimly. His skin was pale in the stark morning light, emphasizing the disparity of his hair.

"What is the matter with you Yves?" He asked directly. One of the things I liked most about Sev was his relative inability to make small talk. He was either quiet or saying something that needed to be said. There was very little preamble.

"It's nothing..." I said trailing off, distracted by a tentacle breaking the water.

"Don't tell me it's nothing. You are not yourself. What did Black do to you?" I grimaced at his name.
