A while later, the underground still dawned on me after my conversation with dad.I spent hours on end talking with Otis about it and filling in Ryo. In the small time we knew Ryo, we'd become an inseparable trio. Something was off about him, but he wasn't one to talk about his feelings.
It was the day I brought Ryo around to get his car looked at by dad, in hopes he would be able to get it road legal again, that made me question just where Ryo had come from.
Ryo followed me to my home in his WRX and as I pulled up the drive, dad was always where he normally was, in the garage working away.
I noticed him squint at us from afar before speaking to someone on his left. The person popped out with a beer in his hand, revealing himself to be Uncle Connie.
He was helping my dad with the project car, his shades and a cheeky grin plastered on his face.
I jumped out and approached the large double garage door, looking back to see Ryo following behind nervously.
"What's up scrapper?" Uncle Connie laughed, giving me a handshake.
I rolled my eyes and smirked, realising he'd been filled in by dad about my fight at Haruna.
"Hey Uncle, Dad, this is Ryo. My friend with the WRX I told you about."
Ryo stepped forward and nodded, dad nodding back as per usual. He wasn't a handshaking kind of guy.
Uncle Connie paused and pulled his glasses down, eyeing Ryo from top to bottom.
Oh lord, here we go.
"You're a big dude aren't ya? How old are you?" He asked whistling at Ryo's build.
Ryo opened his mouth and shut it, chuckling at the ground. I'd already filled him in on my crazy family, especially Kita's parents.
"Uh- I'm nineteen."
Dad sucked his teeth and shook his head at his friend.
"Ignore him, Ryo. He's mentally deficient."
Uncle Connie put his shades back on and took a sip of his beer.
"Whaaat? It's a compliment! You get that from your daddy?" Connie asked insensitively.
I froze and rubbed my face with my palm. In one of our deep midnight talks he had filled me in on his mom, but never mentioned his dad. We didn't go into why and chose to let him tell us when he was ready. He never did.
"You don't have to answer that." I sighed, eyeing him with an apologetic look.
The corners of his mouth turned up in a small smile. Dad peered over curiously before cleaning a tool with an already dirty rag.
"It's all good.. I uh- don't have a dad, so I wouldn't know, sorry." He laughed half-heartedly, making my dad go still.
I frowned at the ground, kicking the stones from under my feet.
"Don't be sorry, kid." Dad smiled, throwing his tool on his bench that was already littered with tools.
"How 'bout you bring up that wrx and we'll take a look at it?" He finished, pulling on his arms out of his shirt. Dad was good at reading a room, and felt that the conversation needed to be shifted.
Ryo smiled and nodded, heading back out into the gravel driveway to grab his car.
Dad ripped his shirt off, sweating from the heat and threw it in Uncle Connies face with a scowl. Dad was surprisingly fit for his age.
