Ava's voiceover, "Alone in the world. Until now. I am a vampire. And this is my story. I shouldn't have come home. I know the risk. But I had no choice. I have to know her."
Ava's registering at Mystic Falls high school and she hears someone say, "Who's this?" Another voice says, "All I see is back." The first voice says, "That's a hot back." Ava smirks and the woman sitting at the desk says, "Your records are incomplete. You're missing immunization records and we do insist on transcripts." Ava compels the woman and says, "Please look again. I'm sure everything you need is there." The woman looks down at the paper and she says, "Well, you're right. So, it is." The first voice says, "I'm sensing Seattle, and she plays the guitar." The second girl laughs and says, "You're really gonna run this whole psychic thing into the ground, huh?" The first girl says, "Pretty much." The second girl says, "I'll be right back." The first girl says, "Please be hot." Ava says, "Thank you." The woman says, "You're welcome." Ava turns around and winks at the first girl and she slightly blushes, and she walks away, and she bumps into the girl she's been stalking, and she says, "Uh, pardon me. Isn't this the men's bathroom?" The girl says, "Yes. Um, I was just... Um... I-I was just... It's a long story." Ava nods and she walks away with the girl staring at her. Later, Ava sits in history class and the teacher says, "Once our home state of Virginia joined confederacy in 1861 it created a tremendous amount of tension within the state. People in Virginia's northwest region had different ideals than those from the traditional deep south. Then Virginia divided in 1863 with the northwest region joining the union..." Ava feels eyes on her and she looks to see the girl she bumped into in the hallway and the girl looks away and Ava smiles. Later, Ava follows the girl into the cemetery, and she sees her writing in her diary and then she sees her running away and she stands behind the girl and she turns around startled and she softly says, "You, okay?" The girl catches her breath and says, "Were you following me?" Ava lies and says, "No, I, uh, I just... I saw you fall." The girl nods and she says, "Uh-huh, and you just happened to be hanging out in a cemetery." Ava says, "I'm visiting. I have, uh, family here." The girl feels bad, and she says, "Oh. Wow. Tactless. I'm sorry. It's the fog. It-it's making me foggy. And then back there, there was this-this bird, and it was all very Hitchcock for a second. That-that is the bird movie, right? The-the Hitchcock? I'm Elena." Ava softly smiles at Elena's rambling, and she says, "I'm Ava." Elena nods with a smile and says, "I know. We have history together." Ava says, "And English and French." Elena says, "Right." Elena then looks down at Ava's ring and she says, "Nice ring." Ava touches her ring, and she says, "Oh. Uh, it's a family ring. Yeah. I'm kind of stuck with it. It's weird, huh?" Elena says, "No, no, it's just, I mean, there are rings and then there's that." Ava then smells blood and she says, "Did you hurt yourself?" Elena says, "Hmm?" Ava says, "Did you hurt yourself?" Elena looks down at her leg and says, "Oh, uh... I don't know." Elena goes over to a rock and rolls up her pants and Ava sees the blood and Elena says, "Oh! Would you look at that? That is not pretty." Ava looks away because she feels herself turning because of the blood and Elena notices and says, "You, okay?" Ava nods and says, "You should go. Take care of that." Ava then disappears and is back in her room at her house and she writes in her journal, and she writes, "I lost control today. Everything I've kept buried inside came rushing to the surface. I'm simply not able to resist her." Later, Ava goes to Elena's house but before she can knock on the door, the door opens and Elena gasps and says, "Oh." Ava softly says, "Sorry, I was about to knock. I wanted to apologize for my disappearing act earlier. I know it was... strange." Elena says, "No worries. I get it, blood makes you squeamish." Ava nods and says, "Something like that. How's your leg?" Elena says, "Oh, it's fine. Just a scratch, barely. How did you know where I lived?" Ava says, "It's a small town. I asked the first person I saw. Um, I thought you might want this back." Ava hands Elena her diary that she left at the cemetery and Elena says, "Oh, I must have dropped it. I... Thank you." Ava says, "Don't worry, I didn't... read it." Elena says, "No? Why not? Most people would have." Ava says, "Well, I wouldn't want anyone to read mine." Elena says, "You keep a journal?" Ava says, "Yeah, if I don't write it down, I forget it. Memories are too important." Elena nods and softly says, "Yeah. I-I'm just gonna, um... You don't have to stay out there." Ava can't come inside because Elena didn't invite her in. Ava says, "I'm fine. Sorry, were you going somewhere?" Elena says, "Yeah, I'm meeting a friend. Do you want to come?" Ava nods and Elena smiles and she takes Ava to The Grille. Ava and Elena walk in, and everyone stares at them and Ava's slightly uncomfortable. A blonde-haired boy walks up to Ava, and he says, "Hey, I'm Matt, nice to meet you." Ava shakes Matt's hand and she says, "Hi. I'm Ava." Matt looks at Elena, smiles at him, and says, "Hey." Matt says, "Hey." Later, Ava's sat at a table with Elena's friends Bonnie and Caroline. Caroline says, "So, you were born in Mystic Falls?" Ava nods and says, "Yeah, and moved when I was still young." Bonnie says, "Parents?" Ava says, "My parents passed away." Elena says, "I'm sorry. Any siblings?" Ava says, "None that I talk to. I live with my uncle." Caroline says, "So, Ava, if you're new then you don't know about the party tomorrow." Bonnie says, "It's a back-to-school thing at the Falls." Ava looks at Elena and she says, "Are you going?" Bonnie smiles and says, "Of course she is." Elena smiles at Ava and puts her hair behind her ear.
