Chapter 15: A Few Good Men

Ava's at Elena's and Ava's shocked to hear what Elena said about Isobel, Elena's mother might be Alaric's dead wife. Ava says, "You think Alaric's wife might have been your mother?" Elena sighs and says, "It can't be true, right? I mean, the coincidence alone is just crazy. I have the address for her friend Trudie." Ava says, "You want to talk to her." Elena says, "I don't know. I... I-I don't know. If it's true and they are the same person, that means that my birth mother is dead. And I don't know if I could handle that." Ava says, "Elena, did Jenna tell you anything about Alaric's wife? How she died?" Elena says, "Just that she was killed, and the case was never solved." Ava nods and Elena says, "You knew that already?" Ava nods and says, "Yeah. The night at the school when he attacked me, he told me some things about her death." Elena says, "Well--" Ava cuts Elena off and says, "No, no, no. It's not possible. The coincidence is... It's too much. Now, listen, if you do decide to go talk to Isobel's friend, I'll go with you. Yeah?" Elena nods and says, "I just don't know what I'm going to do yet." Elena wraps her arms around Ava's neck and gives her a hug. Ava rubs Elena's back and says, "I should get going. I have to go deal with Damon." Elena pulls away from the hug and she says, "How's he doing?" Ava says, "He's dealing in his own way." Later, Ava walks into the living room to find Damon feeding on a bunch of girls and he groans when he sees Ava and he says, "No. Buzzkill Bob." Ava turns off the rock music and Damon says, "Greetings." Ava says, "Can we talk?" Damon says, "Yeah." Ava says, "Without the tri-delts." Damon says, "Anything you have to say to me, you can say in front of them. They're really good at keeping secrets." Damon lets go of the girl he's holding and walks over to Ava, and she says, "How are you doing?" Damon says, "You're worried about me. That's nice. Don't be. There's no need. I'm fine. Why wouldn't I be? Spent the last 145 years with one goal... Get in that tomb. I succeeded. Granted, Katherine wasn't in there to be rescued, but why dwell? No, it's so liberating not having a master plan because I can do whatever the hell I want." Ava says, "That's kind of what I'm afraid of." Damon says, "Relax. I haven't killed anyone in... Too long." Ava nods over to the girls and says, "Those girls?" Damon says, "Will end up in their dorm with headaches... think they blacked out. Business as usual. Predictable you didn't pull me over here for a pep talk. So, drink up. Spill it, sister." Ava grabs the bottle of bourbon, and she says, "There was a woman you may have known a few years back named Isobel in North Carolina at Duke." Damon says, "You want to discuss the women in my past right now? Seriously?" Ava says, "You killed her." Damon says, "What's your point?" Ava says, "I just want to know if you remember anything about her." Damon says, "Oh, it's like a needle in a haystack, Avangeline." Ava says, "Well, think hard. It's important." Damon grabs Ava's shoulder and whispers in her ear saying, "Nothing is important, not anymore." Damon pulls away and pats Ava's shoulder and says, "Great chat. I have to go and exploit some women in the name of grief... which I'm sure you understand. "TTFN," said the tri-delt." Damon smirks and walks away. Later, Ava goes to meet Alaric in the middle of the town square, and he walks up to her, and he says, "Thanks for meeting me. Something's come up." Ava says, "Jenna told you." Alaric says, "Yeah." Ava says, "So, it's true. Your wife Isobel was Elena's birth mother." Alaric says, "What does Elena know?" Ava sighs and crosses her arms and says, "About your wife?" Alaric says, "About everything. About you, your brother." Ava says, "She knows what I am, and she knows that you know about the vampires." Alaric says, "Does she know about Damon and Isobel?" Ava says, "No. I couldn't tell her, not until, I was sure." Alaric says, "You said you'd help me." Ava says, "I asked Damon without saying too much. He doesn't remember." Alaric says, "Ask him again." Ava says, "Damon is not stable right now." Alaric says, "You know, he murdered my wife, or at the very least made a meal out of her. When has he been stable?" Ava says, "I'm telling you not to push this." Alaric says, "Give me a reason not to." Ava says, "Your survival. How's that for a reason? I'll handle it, but for now, I need you to let it go." Alaric says, "Is that what you'll tell Elena? Let it go?" Ava takes a step forward and says, "Leave Elena out of this." Alaric says, "I need to know what happened. I think you would, too." Ava steps back with a sigh and says, "I need something more than just your wife's name a picture, something I could show Damon." Alaric takes a picture out of his wallet and gives it to Ava. Ava puts it in her pocket and walks away. Later, Ava walks into her room to see Elena a little too close to Damon and Elena smiles at her and says, "Ava. There you are." Elena walks up to Ava and Ava softly says, "Hey." Damon grunts while putting on a jacket and says, "I need a bigger jacket. Wow. You know, an occasional sorority girl might, um... You know, help fill you out a little bit." Damon walks away and Elena says, "He's fine." Ava says, "He's Damon." Elena says, "Maybe this heartache will be good for him. It'll remind him that he has one, even if it doesn't beat." Ava says, "Won't hold my breath." Elena softly smiles and then she loses her smile when she says, "So, I went to see Trudie Peterson. I know. I'm sorry. I didn't plan it." Ava crosses her arms and says, "How was it?" Elena says, "She has vervain. She knows about vampire stuff, and it can't be a coincidence." Ava nods and says, "It isn't. This is Alaric's wife." Ava shows Elena the picture and Elena says, "This is her. This is Isobel. He gave this to you?" Ava says, "Everything he knows about vampires, he learned from her. He believes that she was killed by one." Elena says, "Oh, my God." Ava says, "Listen, Elena, there's a lot about Isobel that Alaric can tell you, but I need you to hold off a little while before you talk to him." Elena says, "Why?" Ava says, "I know that it's a lot to ask of you but will do that for me?" Elena nods. Later, Ava leaves her bedroom to go to talk to Damon and she sees him, and he says, "Where'd our girlfriend go?" Ava rolls her eyes at Damon and says, "She's on her way to the grill. I wanted to talk to you." Ava takes out the picture of Isobel and shows Damon and continues to say, "This is the woman, Isobel, from North Carolina. Remember her now?" Damon says, "Who wants to know?" Ava says, "I do." Damon says, "Who else wants to know?" Ava says, "Did you kill her?" Damon says, "Sorry. Don't know her. Hey, are you coming? The real housewives of Mystic Falls await." Damon walks away and Ava sighs. Later, Ava walks into the Grill just as Mrs. Lockwood says, "Damon Salvatore. We don't have much on you." Damon says, "Well, I'm touch to fit on a card." Mrs. Lockwood says, "Do you have any hobbies, like to travel?" Damon says, "Oh, yeah. LA, New York. Couple of years ago, I was in North Carolina. Near the Duke campus, actually. I think, I think Alaric went to school there. Didn't you, Ric? Yeah, 'cause I-I know your wife did. I had a drink with her once. She was, she was a great girl. I ever tell you that? 'Cause she was... Delicious." Elena walks out of the place and Ava follows her, and she says, "Elena." Elena looks at Ava and says, "He killed her? Damon was the vampire that killed her?" Ava says, "I don't know what happened. Alaric said they never found the body." Elena says, "Oh, my God. Ava." Ava says, "I know. I'm sorry. I just wanted to tell you, but I just... I wanted to know more." Elena says, "I was feeling sorry for him, hoping that this whole Katherine thing would change him. I'm so stupid." Ava says, "He doesn't know about the connection to you. I thought about confronting him, but he's already so on edge." Elena says, "Why are you protecting him?" Ava says, "Because you're not the only one hoping that he might actually change." Elena shakes her head, looks behind Ava, and says, "That man." Ava looks behind her to see a man and Elena continues to say, "I saw that man outside of Trudie's." Ava looks suspiciously at the man and Ava looks at Elena and says, "Get back inside. Come on." Ava gently pushes Elena back inside the Grill. Ava walks in and hears Elena say to Damon, "Just as I was starting to think that there something redeemable about you." Ava says, "Elena." Damon looks at Ava and says, "Am I missing something here?" Elena says, "Did I forget to mention earlier when we were talking about my birth mother, the one that gave me up?" Damon says, "Mm-hmm." Elena says, "Her name was Isobel. Go ahead. Reminisce about how you killed her." Elena walks away with Ava following. The couple walks outside, and Ava says, "Come on. Let's get you home." The man they saw earlier looks at Elena and says, "I have a message for you." Elena says, "What?" Ava says, "Who are you?" The man says, "Stop looking." Elena says, "Stop looking for what?" The man says, "She doesn't want to know you. She doesn't want to talk to you." Elena says, "Isobel?" The man says, "You need to stop looking. Do you understand?" Elena says, "She's alive? Does that mean she's a..." Ava says, "Elena, he's under a compulsion." The man says, "Do you understand?" Elena says, "Yes. I do." The man says, "Good. I'm down now." Then the man backs up and then he gets hit by a truck and Elena screams. Ava and Elena rush over to see the man and he's dead. Ava looks at Elena and says, "Come on. Let's get out of here." Ava grabs Elena's hand and walks away. Later, after Ava drops Elena home and makes sure she's okay, Ava goes home and walks into the living room to find Alaric dead on the ground and Damon sitting on the couch. Ava rushes over to Alaric and says, "What happened? What did you do?" Damon says, "Dude, what? He attacked me." Ava says, "Damon." Damon says, "All I did was tell him the truth. His wife didn't want him anymore. It's my fault he couldn't handle it." Ava says, "Like you've been handling Katherine?" Damon says, "I'm handling it fine. You know what? Isobel came to me. She found me. And if she's related to Elena that means she's related to Katherine. Maybe Katherine sent her to me." Ava says, "Stop it. You don't have to keep looking." Damon says, "Can't be a coincidence Isobel sought me out. Can't. I'm assuming you'll take care of this." Damon then walks out of the room and Ava sits on her butt looking at Alaric with a sigh knowing that this is her fault. Ava then notices Alaric's fingers move and Alaric gasps awake and Ava's looking at Alaric shocked his alive and Alaric says, "What happened? What's going on?" Ava says, "You were just... Did Damon turn you?" Alaric says, "No. I went for him, and then he-he stabbed me." Ava says, "No. This is not possible unless vampire blood is in your system. Somebody must have slipped it to you." Alaric says, "No. It's... It's something else." Ava says, "Then how?" Alaric says, "I... Isobel. This ring protected me." Ava looks at Alaric's ring and says, "That's impossible." Alaric says, "I know."
