Nicholas and I hadn't spoken to each other again in a long while. Occasionally I would see him on the street coming from or entering a shop. As far as our communication or face-to-face interactions went, there were none. Word on the street that Nicholas had previously warned about, eventually caught up to me. It was said that he was one of the first men to arrive at the shooting the day Danny had been killed.

"They say he tried to revive the poor man," an older lady whispered to another. "He worked on him for almost ten minutes before any word had reached his men about what happened, and the restwere able to arrive, but by that time it was too late such a tragedy." She clicked her tongue beforecontinuing with her gossip. "Now, my neighbors told me they heard that the family disposed of the men who first arrived. Supposedly if more of themwould've been there all at once to help with the multiple wounds they might've been able to get him to a hospital in time, possibly saving the young man's life. I also heard that Nicholas was in quite a rage after he got home. He locked himself in a room and started acting like a maniac, punching and breaking things, he wrecked the whole chamber!"

"Oh my!" the second older woman whispered back. Holding one hand to her chest and the other covering her mouth. "But why would he do that?" She was unknowingly innocent in the way she asked, just how gossip out to be.

"Oh, you mean you didn't hear?" the first ladyasked, pausing for a minute or two while the other tried to think back. After not too long she said, "Well because Nicholas was the one who had to break the news..."

I looked up to see why it had come to an abrupt stop only to find the first lady looking past the other, catching me eavesdropping on their conversation outside the market. She quickly pulled the other lady along, making her walk some to put distance between us. I never believed in listening to things I heard from other people, but this time it caught my attention and stuck with me.
